POSITION TITLE: Assistant Professor of Biology

REPORTS TO: Math & Science Division Chair, Dr. Katy Everett

POSITION SUMMARY: The Division of Science and Mathematics at Eureka College invites applications for a full-time position in Biology at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting August 2026. The successful candidate will teach 24 credits annually, along with assisting in advising biology, clinical lab science, and pre-professional majors and occasionally mentoring senior thesis projects as part of the college's Honors Program. The biology faculty may be required to participate in the college's interdisciplinary programs including first year seminar or 10 Essentials (general education) science courses at Eureka College. This position has the potential to be offered as a 1-year Visiting Assistant Professor position (with the potential for becoming tenure-track) if degree qualifications and/or preferred experience are not met on day one. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Teach 12 credit hours each semester (24 credits per academic year) of undergraduate coursework in mathematics.

Courses in 2026-27 academic year will include:

  • Principles of Biology I and II
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II
  • Possible: Molecular and Cellular Biology or Microbiology

Future courses could include and/or introduce:

  • Microbiology
  • Genetics
  • Computational Biology
  • Botany or Plant Science
  • Soil Science
  • Research Methods
  • Comparative Anatomy

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve on college committees.
  • Participate in faculty governance (monthly meetings).
  • Supervise undergraduate honors theses & research (as needed).
  • Help in the recruiting process of future/prospective students.
  • Propose innovations to the Biology program at Eureka College to meet the demands of the current job market and student interests.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:

May supervise student workers.

EDUCATION

Essential:

  • PhD in Biology or related field, doctoral degree, or ABD with the requirements for the PhD completed by the appointment time of August 1, 2024.
  • MS applications will also be considered for a Visiting Assistant Professor, 1-year appointment.

Desirable: Previous teaching in higher education

SALARY RANGE: $45,000 - $55,000 annually

WORKING CONDITIONS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk or sit. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Normal workdays are Monday through Friday 8:00AM to 5:00PM, including one hour allocated for lunch. Some flexibility for evening or weekend hours is required.
