Position Summary
The UNC School of Government seeks an attorney with a commitment to public service, a desire to teach, and a strong interest in legal research and writing to serve as an Assistant Professor of Public Law and Government with a primary focus on local environmental law and land use law.
North Carolina is one of the fastest growing states in the country. Growth pressures across the state are driving demands for local capacity in land use planning, development permitting, and environmental management. Responding to those demands, the faculty member in this tenure track position will provide written scholarship, instruction, and advising to state and local government officials on topics of local environmental law and land use law.
For local environmental law, this position will focus primarily on the law and practice of stormwater management regulations, including erosion and sedimentation control, post-construction stormwater management, water-supply watershed regulations, and related regulations and enforcement.
For land use law, this position will focus on topics including planning, zoning, and related development regulations.
Teaching will include short courses and workshops designed for local elected and appointed board members, local government administrators, and local government attorneys. The faculty member will work alongside colleagues some of whom focus on community development, emergency management, municipal and county authority, and local government finance, as well as colleagues who work on overlapping topics of land use law.
Successful faculty members in this type of position become statewide experts and trusted advisors for public officials across North Carolina. Every consultation with a public official, every class taught, and every element of their published scholarship contribute to the School's 95-year legacy of improving North Carolina through better governance.
