    Position Summary

    The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing daily produce department operations, ensuring exceptional customer service, product freshness, food safety compliance, and department profitability. This position assists with inventory management, merchandising, associate development, shrink control, and operational execution while helping maintain a fresh, clean, and inviting produce department that meets company standards.

    Key Responsibilities Department Operations

    • Assist in managing daily produce department activities and workflows.
    • Ensure produce items are properly received, handled, stocked, rotated, and displayed.
    • Support inventory management through ordering, receiving, and maintaining proper stock levels.
    • Monitor product quality, freshness, and presentation throughout the day.
    • Help coordinate department production and replenishment to meet customer demand.
    • Assist with maintaining accurate inventory and minimizing product loss.

    Customer Service

    • Deliver exceptional customer service and create a positive shopping experience.
    • Assist customers with product selection, preparation suggestions, and product-related inquiries.
    • Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
    • Promote department products through product knowledge and suggestive selling.
    • Support a customer-focused culture throughout the department.

    Merchandising & Sales

    • Maintain attractive, clean, and fully stocked produce displays.
    • Ensure pricing, signage, and promotional materials are accurate and current.
    • Support seasonal, promotional, and sales-driving merchandising programs.
    • Monitor sales trends and identify opportunities to improve performance.
    • Ensure department presentation reflects freshness, quality, and abundance.

    Food Safety & Compliance

    • Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and company standards.
    • Monitor product rotation, code dates, and freshness standards.
    • Maintain department cleanliness, organization, and sanitation.
    • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of produce products.
    • Promote and enforce safe work practices among all associates.

    Leadership & Team Development

    • Assist with training, coaching, and developing produce associates.
    • Provide daily direction and support to department team members.
    • Foster a positive work environment built on teamwork, accountability, and respect.
    • Assist with labor planning and scheduling efforts.
    • Serve as acting department leader in the Produce Manager''s absence.

    Financial Performance

    • Assist in managing department expenses, inventory, and shrink reduction initiatives.
    • Support achievement of sales, labor, and profit goals.
    • Monitor productivity and operational efficiency.
    • Help identify opportunities to improve profitability and customer satisfaction.
    • Support initiatives that drive sales growth and operational excellence.

    Qualifications Required

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Previous produce, grocery, retail, food service, or related experience.
    • Strong customer service and communication skills.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
    • Basic understanding of produce handling, merchandising, and inventory management.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

    Preferred

    • Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
    • Experience in produce operations or grocery retail management.
    • Knowledge of inventory control, ordering systems, and shrink management.
    • Familiarity with food safety and sanitation regulations.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
    • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of up to 50 pounds.
    • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, and perform repetitive motions.
    • Ability to work in refrigerated environments and varying temperatures.
    • Manual dexterity required for stocking, trimming, and handling produce products.
