Job Title: Assistant Principal, Elementary

Reports to: Principal

Dept./School: Heritage

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Primary Purpose:

Assist the school principal in overall administration of instructional program and campus level operations. Coordinate assigned student discipline, attendance, activities and other services.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Master's degree
  • Valid Texas Principal / Mid-Management or other appropriate Texas certificate
  • Certified appraiser for District approved teacher appraisal system preferred
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Thorough understanding of school operations
  • Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Ability to implement policy and procedure
  • Ability to interpret data

Experience:

  • Three years experience as a classroom teacher

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

General

Instructional Management

  • Participate in development and evaluation of educational programs.
  • Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  • Promote the use of technology in teaching/learning process.
  • Assist the principal in developing and setting campus performance objectives for each Academic Excellence Indicator using the campus performance objective committee.
  • Participate in planning and evaluation of campus standardized testing program.
  • Coordinate all or some campus-wide testing initiatives, including district and/or state-mandated testing.

School/Organizational Climate

  • Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.

Extracurricular Activities

  • Assists the Principal in supervision of extracurricular activities, which may occur outside regular school hours.

Personnel Management

  • Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences. Serve as second appraiser for designated teacher appraisal system.
  • Assist principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

  • Supervise operations in principal's absence.
  • Assist the campus principal plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.
  • Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with attendance clerk on follow-up investigations.
  • Assist the campus principal compile annual budget requests based on documented program needs.
  • Assist the campus principal requisition supplies and equipment; check inventory; maintain records; and verify receipts for materials.
  • Assume responsibilities of textbook custodian for the campus, including ordering and accounting for all textbooks supplied by the State and preparing all related reports.
  • Assist the campus principal with the responsibility of requesting substitutes, preparing weekly reports and establishing a good working relationship between the regular and substitute teachers.
  • Assist the Principal in supervision of extracurricular activities which may occur outside regular school hours.
  • Assist with safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  • Coordinate transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
  • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.

Student Management

  • Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.
  • Assist with developing a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.
  • Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  • Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.

School/Community Relations

  • Articulate the school's mission to community and solicit its support in realizing mission.
  • Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  • Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Special Programs

  • Provides behavioral counseling and intervention with special programs students when needed.
  • Assists with ensuring that the IEP behavioral accommodations and interventions are met in accordance with the student's IEP.
  • Assists with behavioral intervention of special education students and consult when needed.
  • Tracks special programs data for the campus, including: 10-day rule, ISS placements, OSS placements, and DAEP placements.
  • Attends Manifestation Determination Reviews (MDR) as an advocate for the student.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Share supervisory responsibility for staff with school principal. Supervise teachers, paraprofessionals and clerical personnel and others as assigned.

Equipment Used:

Standard Office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.

Working Conditions:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Frequent district-wide and state-wide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold and inclement weather), exposure to noise. Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and twisting. Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching. Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional physical restraint of student to control behavior.
