JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Principal supports the Principal in providing instructional leadership, ensuring safe and effective school operations, and fostering a positive learning environment across two Alternative Education Program sites. This position plays a critical role in promoting student success by overseeing daily operations, supervising staff, implementing behavioral and academic interventions, and collaborating with families, sending school districts, and community agencies. The Assistant Principal works closely with students who have been assigned to the program due to disciplinary infractions and is committed to supporting successful behavioral, academic, and social-emotional growth while preparing students for a successful transition back to their home schools. Since the program operates at two locations, the Assistant Principal must be able to travel regularly between both sites to provide consistent leadership, oversight, and support.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree in Educational Leadership or successful completion of a leadership program
  • Must hold or be eligible for State of Delaware Certification as a School Principal/Assistant Principal
  • At least four (4) years of successful teaching or educator experience
  • At least two (2) years of demonstrated and effective leadership experience in an educational environment
  • Possess strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to handle complex issues, multiple tasks, responsibilities and make decisions quickly and effectively.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Principal in providing instructional, operational, and administrative leadership across two Alternative Education Program sites.
  • Travel regularly between both program locations to ensure consistent leadership, program implementation, and staff support.
  • Supervise student arrival, dismissal, and transportation procedures.
  • Coordinate school safety procedures, emergency protocols, and required safety drills.
  • Conducts observations and evaluations for teachers, specialists, and support staff.
  • Provide coaching and professional learning on tiered academic, behavioral, attendance, and mental health supports.
  • Oversee student discipline, including investigations, documentation, parent communication, and follow-up interventions.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, families, sending school districts, staff, and community partners.
  • Collaborate with counselors, transition specialists, and behavioral support staff to coordinate student services.
  • Coordinate student referrals and ensure all intake documentation meets Delaware Department of Education requirements.
  • Lead intake meetings with new students and families.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and mentoring staff.
  • Participate in all required district and CDAP professional learning, meetings, and trainings.
  • Manage and report program data required for Delaware Department of Education evaluations, applications, and funding.
  • Assist with quarterly CDAP meetings and state assessment administration.
  • Oversee processes to ensure students receive daily meals in coordination with Child Nutrition staff.
  • Serve as a liaison with outside agencies, including probation, counseling, and the Division of Family Services, as appropriate.
  • Support student transition planning and successful reintegration into home schools or other educational settings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required background checks and clearances.

Compensation for the Assistant Principal role will be based on the candidate's educational background, professional qualifications, and prior administrative experience, in alignment with district salary guidelines for SCOPE.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:

The Assistant Principal is expected to work a minimum of 7.5 hours per day, consistent with district expectations for administrative staff, with additional time as necessary to effectively fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

The Assistant Principal is expected to maintain consistent and reliable attendance, demonstrate strong leadership and professionalism, and effectively manage school operations. Responsibilities continue throughout the summer months and may include oversight of summer programs, planning for the upcoming school year, staff supervision, and other administrative duties as assigned. Flexibility is essential to meet the evolving needs of students, staff, and the district.
