The Assistant Nurse Manager – NICU provides operational, clinical, and leadership support for a highly specialized Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This role partners with unit leadership to coordinate patient care, support staff development, improve operational performance, and ensure delivery of compassionate, evidence-based neonatal care.
The ideal candidate will possess strong NICU nursing expertise, leadership capabilities, and a passion for supporting critically ill and premature infants within a collaborative, high-acuity hospital environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Operational Leadership
  • Support daily operations of the Level III NICU department
  • Coordinate patient care delivery and operational workflow
  • Promote safe, high-quality, and compassionate neonatal care
  • Support staffing coordination and resource management initiatives
Staff Leadership & Development
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment
  • Support staff education, mentorship, and career development
  • Assist with onboarding, coaching, and performance improvement initiatives
  • Promote teamwork, engagement, and professional growth
Patient Care & Quality Improvement
  • Support evidence-based nursing practices and neonatal care standards
  • Drive performance improvement and patient safety initiatives
  • Monitor quality outcomes and operational efficiency
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards
Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with:
    • Physicians
    • Neonatologists
    • Nursing leadership
    • Respiratory therapy teams
    • Interdisciplinary care teams
  • Support patient and family-centered care initiatives
  • Assist with communication and coordination across departments
Must-Have Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Nursing (BSN or MSN)
  • Current and valid California RN License
  • BLS Certification – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • NICRNC (Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse Certification) required within 6 months of hire or transfer
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) required within 90 days of hire or transfer
  • Leadership or management experience required
  • Strong NICU clinical nursing background
  • Strong communication, leadership, and operational skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience within Level III or Level IV NICU environments
  • Prior charge nurse, assistant manager, or NICU leadership experience
  • Experience supporting performance improvement and quality initiatives
  • Strong staff development and mentorship background
