General Statement of Job:

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a frontline nursing leadership role responsible for coordinating high-quality, safe, and timely patient care in the Intensive Care Unit at Lakeside Medical Center. This role position integrates unit-based operational leadership. The role functions as a clinical leader and educator for the unit. The ANM may assume a patient assignment or charge nurse role when operational needs are required.

Essential Functions:

Leads and coordinates safe, effective patient care during assigned shifts through planning, communication, direction, and evaluation of nursing staff activities. Assigns and delegates patient care based on acuity, patient needs, and staff competency/skill mix; monitors staffing using approved staffing grids. Ensures compliance with hospital policies, professional nursing standards, the Nurse Practice Act, National Patient Safety Goals, and all applicable regulatory requirements. Leads daily safety huddles and communicates priorities, risks, and patient care issues. Provides timely feedback, coaching, and recommendations to improve quality of care and staff performance. Serves as a professional role model in clinical judgment, professionalism, communication, and problem-solving. Supports staff education on hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and evidence-based practice. Supervises appropriate use, documentation, and charging of resources; identifies opportunities to improve resource allocation and supply utilization. Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to establish departmental goals, performance improvement strategies, and action plans. Functions as charge nurse or assuming a patient assignment when operational needs are required. Acts as a liaison among patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary departments to promote positive outcomes and a compassionate care environment. Audits clinical documentation for accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance. Promotes a safe, therapeutic environment and patient- and family-centered care. Rounds on patients and families to assess satisfaction, address concerns, and support service recovery. Participates in investigation and resolution of complaints and grievances.

Staff Education, Development & Engagement:

Supports onboarding, orientation, and ongoing competency validation of nursing staff. Monitors preceptor performance and new staff progress during unit-specific orientation. Conducts or participates in preceptee evaluations and identifies needs for additional education or remediation. Educates staff on new or revised policies, procedures, and practice changes. Assists with corrective action, coaching, and performance improvement education as needed. Participates in peer interviews, performance evaluations, and recruitment/retention activities. Serves as a clinical resource and mentor; fosters teamwork, professional growth, and engagement. Actively participates in performance improvement and customer service teams. Participates in community outreach activities as assigned.

Compliance, Privacy & Emergency Preparedness:

Ensures protection of patient confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and organizational privacy policies, limiting PHI access and disclosure to the minimum necessary. Accesses the medical record only as required to provide direct and indirect patient care and leadership oversight. Makes disclosures only as permitted by law and policy to support patient care and required reporting. Performs assigned roles within the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) and participates in emergency preparedness and disaster response activities as required.

Staff Education, Quality & Professional Development:

Assists with onboarding, orientation, and ongoing competency validation for ICU staff. Participates in performance improvement, quality, and customer service teams. Maintains personal clinical and leadership competency and engages in professional development. Participates in community outreach and stroke awareness activities as assigned.

Emergency Preparedness & Compliance:

Performs assigned responsibilities within the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS). Complies with all HIPAA and confidentiality requirements, limiting PHI access to the minimum necessary.

Nursing degree from an accredited program required. BSN preferred.

Experience:

Minimum three (3) years of acute care nursing experience required. Emergency or ICU experience preferred.

Licensure:

Active Florida Registered Nurse license required.

Certification:

BLS and ACLS required. NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required (or obtained within defined timeframe). Critical Care Registered Nurse (AACN) specialty certification (e.g., CCRN) or leadership (CNML, NEA-BC, NE BC) required within two years or preferred at hire.
