Position Summary
The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing all aspects of the Meat Department, including sales growth, merchandising, inventory management, food safety, product quality, labor utilization, and associate development. This position helps ensure the department consistently provides fresh, high-quality meat products, exceptional customer service, and operational excellence while achieving sales and profitability goals.
Key Responsibilities Department Operations
- Assist in managing the daily operations of the Meat Department.
- Ensure meat cases, displays, and service areas are fully stocked, clean, and maintained to company standards.
- Monitor product freshness, quality, rotation, and code dating.
- Support ordering, receiving, inventory control, and replenishment activities.
- Maintain proper storage, handling, and merchandising of all meat products.
- Execute promotional programs, seasonal displays, and merchandising plans.
Customer Service
- Deliver exceptional customer service and assist customers with product selection, preparation questions, and special orders.
- Promote department items through suggestive selling and product knowledge.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Foster a customer-focused culture among department associates.
- Ensure customers receive a fresh, well-stocked, and inviting shopping experience.
Leadership & Team Development
- Assist with recruiting, onboarding, training, and developing department associates.
- Provide daily direction, coaching, and support to team members.
- Help establish and maintain productivity, quality, and service expectations.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment.
- Lead by example through professionalism, reliability, and strong customer service.
Product Quality & Food Safety
- Ensure all meat products meet company quality and freshness standards.
- Monitor proper product handling, storage, rotation, and sanitation practices.
- Maintain compliance with food safety regulations, company policies, and workplace safety standards.
- Ensure temperature logs, cleaning schedules, and food safety documentation are completed accurately.
- Support department readiness for audits, inspections, and food safety reviews.
Merchandising & Inventory Management
- Assist with inventory management to maximize sales and minimize shrink.
- Monitor inventory levels and support accurate ordering practices.
- Verify pricing, signage, and promotional displays for accuracy.
- Identify opportunities to improve sales through effective merchandising and product presentation.
- Support shrink reduction initiatives through proper handling and inventory controls.
Financial Performance
- Assist in achieving department sales, labor, gross margin, and shrink goals.
- Monitor product losses and support cost-control initiatives.
- Support labor planning and productivity improvement efforts.
- Review department performance metrics and assist with action planning.
- Help maintain operational efficiency and profitability.
Qualifications Preferred Experience
- Previous meat department, grocery retail, food service, or fresh foods experience preferred.
- Prior supervisory, lead, or management experience preferred.
- Experience with meat merchandising, inventory control, and food safety practices preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of meat products, food safety, and sanitation procedures.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to safely operate meat processing and department equipment.
