Overview
Under the guidance of the Supervisor, the Assistant Supervisor works in a clinical laboratory environment and performs all clinical tests in the designated areas of responsibility, including providing guidance to staff. The Assistant Supervisor is responsible for compliance with all regulatory requirements as they pertain to the laboratory.
Position is 100% on-site at the Dana-Farber Merrimack Valley location in Methuen, MA. Required hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 am - 3 pm.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Performs all the duties of the level I, II, and III Medical Technologist role. Provides day-to-day supervision of staff and operations, along with and in the absence of the supervisor, must be available for on-site telephone or electronic consultation. Monitors test analyses to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance is maintained. Trains other staff members in the use of the laboratory equipment, computer systems, and associated backup systems. Successfully operates and troubleshoots a variety of instruments, as demonstrated by performance at various workstations, ensuring corrective actions are taken and documented. Maintains close communications with the technical supervisor on all matters pertinent to the policies and procedures of the laboratory, interact with laboratory leadership as needed. Assists the technical supervisor in scheduling, inventory, preparation of payroll information, development, and approval of new procedures, quality control, continuing education, and quality improvement activities as needed. Assists the supervisor with feedback to conduct annual performance and competency evaluations of staff members to assure that all requirements included in the various job descriptions are met. Attends all required safety, infection control, departmental sessions, and further continuing education. Adheres to all Dana-Farber policies and procedures, including but not limited to patient privacy and confidentiality, code of conduct, and ethical behavior. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task as needed. Knowledge of a variety of computer application systems, including laboratory computer systems. Works effectively and efficiently under pressure and during emergency situations. Flexible in thinking and adaptable to a constantly changing environment. Demonstrated ability to be reliable and dependable under a variety of circumstances. Strong interpersonal skills, including responsiveness to staff and clinical provider needs. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, written and verbal.
Minimum Job Qualifications
Associates degree in a lab-related science. Bachelors degree preferred. 5 years of relevant experience as a Medical Technologist. ASCP or nationally recognized equivalent preferred. Management or supervisory experience preferred.
License and Certification
Registration Required: None.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Indirectly supervises the Medical Technologist staff. Assists supervisor in the day-to-day running of the clinical laboratory. Patient Contact: None.
