SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY

Follow guidelines established in Custodial Training Manual and Custodial Policy and Procedure Manual by Facilities Management Division. Supervises or directs and works with the assigned housekeeping staff in cleaning and maintaining buildings and grounds to ensure safe, clean, and comfortable conditions for occupants. May perform the duties of the Head Custodian when the Head Custodian is absent.

QUALIFICATIONS

Work usually requires a level of knowledge usually acquired through successful graduation from high school or G.E.D. and one to two years of progressively responsible work experience in the area of Large Building Housekeeping.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads a moderate-sized staff of custodians engaged in cleaning and performing light maintenance work inside and outside school buildings.

Performs or leads the custodial staff in cleaning the walls, windows, floors, furniture, and other fixtures, such as lights and commodes, within the building. Selects the appropriate cleaning materials and equipment for cleaning.

Performs or leads the custodial staff in such maintenance tasks as changing light bulbs, cleaning filters, replacing or oiling worn belts, possibly cleaning boiler, placing boards over broken windows, or making emergency repairs of furniture or structural damage, or calling appropriate department for repair.

Ensures building security, locking and unlocking doors for cleaning or special school events taking place after regular hours, checks for unauthorized persons in the building, calls security at opening or closing of the building, checks and locks windows.

Performs or leads the custodial staff in maintaining the grounds surrounding the buildings on such tasks as mowing, picking up litter, trimming bushes, moving snow with motorized snow removal equipment, or shovel, selects equipment for use on such tasks, determines if work is of sufficient quality.

Performs or leads the custodial staff in such tasks as minor painting, shampooing carpets, cleaning out incinerator, or carrying trash to dumpster.

Performs or leads the custodial staff in moving furniture, such as desks, tables, and chairs.

Inspects buildings and grounds and responds to comments from parents, students, faculty, supervisors, or principals to determine the need for the above-mentioned tasks.

May unload and stock paper and cleaning supplies for school.

May act in the absence of the Head Custodian on matters such as obtaining temporary staff, preparing work schedules, and assigning tasks.

Shovels snow, lifts, and moves furniture, mops floors, and operates floor buffer polishers.
