Purpose
The Assistant Fitness Coach & Intramural Sports Coordinator will be responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the Ferrum College Fitness Center while coordinating and promoting a comprehensive campus recreation and intramural sports program. The position is designed to support student wellness, engagement, and retention through fitness programming, recreational sports opportunities, and educational wellness initiatives. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with Athletics, Student Affairs, Residence Life, Wellness Services, and campus stakeholders to provide a positive and inclusive recreational experience for all students.


Duties
Fitness Center Operations
1. Assist with the day-to-day operations of the Ferrum College Fitness Center.
2. Ensure the facility remains clean, organized, safe, and welcoming.
3. Monitor fitness center usage and enforce facility policies and procedures.
4. Assist with equipment inspections, preventative maintenance, and reporting repair needs.
5. Support facility opening, closing, and operational scheduling.

Fitness Coaching & Member Assistance
1. Provide guidance and instruction on proper exercise techniques and equipment usage.
2. Assist students and employees with developing basic fitness and wellness plans.
3. Conduct fitness center orientations for new students and campus users.
4. Promote safe training practices and injury prevention strategies.
5. Assist with group fitness classes and wellness programming.

Intramural Sports Programming
1. Develop, organize, and administer a comprehensive intramural sports program.
2. Coordinate leagues, tournaments, special events, and recreational competitions.
3. Establish playing rules, participant guidelines, and risk management procedures.
4. Recruit participants and encourage broad campus involvement.
5. Coordinate officials, schedules, equipment, and facility reservations.

Student Wellness Programming
Assist in developing wellness initiatives focused on physical, emotional, and social well-being.
Collaborate with campus departments to promote healthy lifestyle choices.
Coordinate educational programs related to fitness, nutrition, stress management, and overall wellness.
Support campus-wide health awareness events and wellness campaigns.

Student Employee Supervision
Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise student employees assigned to the Fitness Center and Intramural Program.
Conduct regular staff meetings and training sessions.
Monitor student employee performance and provide developmental feedback.
Ensure student staff understand and follow all facility policies and safety procedures.

Campus Recreation Events
Coordinate recreational activities and special events designed to enhance student and employee engagement.
Assist with orientation activities, residence hall competitions, wellness challenges, and campus-wide recreation initiatives.
Develop innovative programming opportunities that encourage participation from a diverse
student and employee population.

Facility Scheduling Assistance
Assist with coordinating facility reservations and usage schedules.
Collaborate with Athletics, Student Affairs, Residence Life, Human Resources, and external groups regarding facility availability.
Help maximize facility utilization while maintaining a safe and effective operating environment.

Safety and Risk Management
Monitor activities within the Fitness Center and recreational facilities to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
Respond appropriately to injuries, emergencies, and facility incidents.
Maintain knowledge of emergency action plans and risk management procedures.
Assist in conducting facility safety inspections.

Equipment Maintenance and Inventory
Assist with maintaining inventory of fitness and recreational equipment.
Monitor equipment condition and recommend replacement or repair as needed.
Help ensure equipment is stored properly and available for programming needs.

Marketing and Promotion
Promote intramural sports, group fitness classes, and recreational programs through social media, email campaigns, campus publications, and special events.
Develop creative strategies to increase student participation and engagement.
Assist with creating marketing materials and promotional content.

Assessment and Reporting
Track participation numbers and program effectiveness.
Prepare reports and recommendations regarding program growth and facility utilization.
Assist with evaluating student satisfaction and identifying opportunities for improvement.

Policy Enforcement
Enforce all Fitness Center and Intramural Sports policies consistently and professionally.
Address conflicts, behavioral concerns, and facility violations appropriately.
Report significant incidents to appropriate supervisors and campus officials.

On campus resident with on-call responsibilities with the Residence Life staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required; degree in Exercise Science, Sport Management, Recreation, Physical Education, Health Promotion, or related field preferred.
Previous experience in campus recreation, intramural sports, fitness programming, wellness programming, or athletic operations preferred.
Experience supervising student employees preferred.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse campus population.

Certifications:
CPR/AED and First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment).
Personal Training, Group Fitness, Recreation, or Wellness-related certifications preferred.

Licenses:
Current and valid driver’s license required.


Salary Range: $35,568.00
