GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Are you interested in being in court and trying cases, putting the bad guys away? Attorneys in our office develop their legal skills in a collaborative environment while doing interesting and meaningful work and maintaining a work-life balance.

The District Attorneys Office of Laramie County is seeking highly motivated, organized, and professional applicants for an Assistant District Attorney. This position handles the prosecution of misdemeanors and initial court proceedings in felony cases; this position may also assist with the prosecution of felony cases in Laramie County. This involves preparing a variety of court documents, arguing motions before trial courts, and representing the State of Wyoming in jury and bench trials. The attorney will have daily interaction with law enforcement and coordinate case investigations. The position requires initiative and independence and will have responsibility for a substantial caseload. There are opportunities for training and professional growth.

Candidates must currently be licensed to practice in Wyoming and be in good standing with the Wyoming State Bar. They must be able to demonstrate a high level of initiative and responsibility. Candidates who are within 6 months of graduating from law school may also be considered.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

  • Initiates prosecution of individuals for felony and misdemeanor criminal offenses for Laramie County by filing criminal charges.
  • Review investigative reports and work with law enforcement officers and agencies to ensure that all elements of the offense have been investigated.
  • Represent the State of Wyoming in bench and jury trials.
  • Must have the ability to resolve cases under general supervision.
  • Handle all matters relating to prosecution: document review; evidence analysis; legal research, including preparing written motions; motions practice; and preparing cases for trial, including documents, exhibits, and witnesses. This requires a thorough knowledge of criminal statutes and case law, the rules of criminal procedure, the rules of evidence, jury instructions, and compliance with the courts criminal case management orders.
  • Confer and negotiate with defense attorneys for the resolution of pending cases. This includes meeting and conferring with crime victims and their families to ensure their rights are observed and that they have an opportunity to participate in the criminal justice system.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants who are licensed to practice law in Wyoming and a member in Good Standing with the Wyoming State Bar, or the ability to be so by the date of hire.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of Wyoming criminal statutes and regulations
  • Knowledge of the rules of criminal procedure and jury instructions, as to the elements of each offense

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Juris Doctorate

Experience:

0-2 years of relevant legal experience as a practicing attorney.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Requires membership in the State Bar as an attorney qualified to practice law in this state or ability to be licensed within 6 months of hire.

  • This position is an at-will position and is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney pursuant to W.S. §9-1-804(c)
  • Salary is commensurate with relevant legal experience and supervisory experience.
