Assistant Distribution Designer (Electric Utility)

Job Type: Contract-to-Hire

Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Assistant Distribution Designer to support electric utility distribution projects in the Kansas City area. This role is ideal for candidates with a strong background in electric distribution design who are looking to contribute to the development of reliable utility infrastructure while working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

The successful candidate will assist with the design and development of construction work packages for overhead and underground electric distribution systems, ensuring compliance with client standards, industry regulations, and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed design drawings, construction packages, specifications, and material lists for overhead and underground electric distribution projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations including pole loading analysis, conductor sizing, voltage drop calculations, and transformer sizing.
  • Prepare construction-ready design packages in accordance with client standards and project requirements.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards, including the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, field personnel, and other stakeholders to successfully execute projects.
  • Process and evaluate field data collected during site visits to verify existing conditions and support design development.
  • Prepare and submit permit applications and supporting documentation to regulatory agencies and municipalities.
  • Provide technical support during construction and assist in resolving design-related issues.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality, accuracy, and schedule commitments.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to project team success.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related technical field required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in any Engineering discipline is not eligible for this position.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in electric utility distribution design.
  • Direct experience with overhead and underground electric distribution systems is required.
  • Proficiency with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, GIS applications, and related utility design tools.
  • Strong understanding of electric distribution infrastructure, construction practices, and utility standards.
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and other applicable industry regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preparing utility construction work packages.
  • Knowledge of utility permitting processes and requirements.
  • Familiarity with utility asset management and mapping systems.
  • Experience supporting construction activities and field coordination.
