Job Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of WinthropLIFE coordinates and facilitates the daily operations of the program, collaborating with faculty, staff, and community partners to provide a comprehensive and inclusive postsecondary education experience for students with intellectual disabilities. This position recruits, hires, trains, and supervises Peer Mentors and develops individualized student schedules using a person-centered planning approach. The Assistant Director supports students in achieving their highest level of independence, competitive employment and active participation in local communities.

  • Recruits Peer Mentor applicants through a variety of outreach strategies, including on-campus recruiting efforts, social media campaigns, and presentations to classes and student organizations.
  • Represents WinthropLIFE in a professional manner on and off campus including travel for conferences or school visits up to five times per semester.
  • Interviews, hires, trains, supervises, schedules and evaluates Peer Mentors.
  • Oversees Peer Mentor payments.
  • Develops individual student schedules using a person-centered planning approach.
  • Maintains current and past student records.
  • Creates resources to support LIFE students, staff and mentors.
  • Develops and implements program evaluation tools.
  • Maintains current policy and procedures for WinthropLIFE.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in special education, health and human services, or counseling.
  • Five years of experience teaching special education at the middle or secondary level.
  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks efficiently while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative, self-motivation, and accountability.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain positive, professional relationships with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly, effectively, and appropriately to varied audiences.
  • Skill in developing creative solutions to challenges and adapting approaches to meet diverse needs and objectives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience training, mentoring, or providing professional development to students, educators, or other professionals.
  • Experience in curriculum development, instructional design, or the creation and implementation of educational programs.

Additional Comments

Annual Salary/Hiring Range: $50,000; Aug. 1 to June 15 each year.

Telecommuting: Employees are not eligible for telecommuting/remote work during their 12-month probationary period. After that time, certain positions may be eligible for telecommuting/remote work at the discretion of the supervisor and in accordance with Winthrop policies.
