Primary Purpose: Assist the Director of Transportation in planning, directing, and coordinating all functions of the Transportation Department, with a focused responsibility on daily operations and student management systems.This position oversees routing, dispatch, training, and the Student Management Program to ensure safe, efficient, and scholar-focused transportation services. The role supports operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and a positive transportation environment for scholars, staff, parents, and the community.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B with P & S endorsements
  • Current TEA School Bus Certification
  • TAPT Certifications (preferred)
  • Must pass DOT physical and Pre-employment DOT drug screening

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Strong knowledge of routing software (Edulog preferred), GPS systems, and student accountability tools
  • Ability to design, adjust, and manage regular and special education routes in compliance with TEA guidelines
  • Knowledge of student behavior management practices in a school transportation environment
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage conflict, investigations, and sensitive situations with professionalism
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and transportation-related systems
  • Ability to analyze data and support reporting requirements

Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years in school transportation or related field
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience with routing, TEA reporting, and student management systems preferred
  • Experience working with scholars, parents, and campus administrators preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Leadership & Operations

  • Assist the Director in the overall supervision and direction of the Transportation Department
  • Make operational decisions in the absence of the Director
  • Coordinate and assign bus routes to regular and substitute drivers
  • Adjust routes, schedules, and driver assignments to meet operational needs
  • Oversee dispatch, routing systems, and transportation software functionality
  • Ensure efficient daily operations that support safe and on-time service for scholars

Student Management & Safety

  • Oversee and manage the Transportation Student Management Program
  • Investigate student safety and behavior incidents, including use of video systems and stakeholder conferences
  • Implement appropriate corrective actions and support positive scholar behavior
  • Coordinate and oversee school bus safety and evacuation training district-wide
  • Support campuses in promoting safe bus rider expectations and discipline processes

Training & Staff Development

  • Assist in conducting driver safety meetings and required training sessions
  • Provide training and retraining on student management, safety, and operational procedures
  • Support onboarding and development of drivers, monitors, and support staff
  • Promote a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement

Communication & Community Relations

  • Serve as a liaison between drivers, campuses, parents, and the community
  • Respond to concerns, complaints, and transportation-related inquiries
  • Participate in parent conferences and campus meetings as needed
  • Ensure clear, consistent, and professional communication across all stakeholders

Compliance & Reporting

  • Assist in preparation and submission of TEA transportation reports
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations
  • Maintain accurate records related to routing, discipline, incidents, and operations
  • Support audits and documentation requirements

Personnel & Supervision

  • Assist in interviewing and recommending employment of drivers and monitors
  • Supervise and evaluate assigned staff including route supervisors, dispatch, and clerical roles
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and performance support
  • Support personnel decisions related to student safety and operational needs

Safety & Incident Management

  • Participate in investigation of bus accidents and incidents
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and district personnel as needed
  • Ensure timely communication with parents and campuses following incidents
  • Promote and enforce a culture of safety in all transportation operations

General Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate ethical, professional, and scholar-focused leadership
  • Maintain confidentiality in all student and personnel matters
  • Monitor quality and clarity of departmental communications
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation

  • Transportation Supervisors (Regular & Special Programs)
  • Dispatcher, Routers, Safety and Training Coordinator
  • Bus Drivers and Monitors (as related to operations and student management)

Working Conditions

  • Maintain emotional control under stress and frequent interruptions
  • Work indoors and outdoors with exposure to extreme weather and vehicle environments
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting
  • Ability to operate a school bus and related equipment and respond to emergency situations
  • Occasional irregular and extended hours
