Primary Purpose:

Assist the Director of Transportation in planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating all transportation operations for the district. Support the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of students while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Coordinate daily transportation activities including routing, driver supervision, fleet operations, training, safety programs, and customer service. Assist with department budgeting, personnel management, and strategic planning while serving as the Director''s designee in their absence. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement throughout the transportation department.

Education/Certification:

Bachelor''s degree preferred or five years of leadership experience

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to direct and manage operations of a large fleet of vehicles

Knowledge of vehicle repair and maintenance

Knowledge of health and safety programs

Knowledge of school Policies, Texas Education Agency rules, and School Board policies and regulations

Ability to interpret and disseminate information to individual and groups

Ability to provide effective safety training programs

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

Prefer two years of supervisory experience in transportation operations, safety management, occupational safety and health, crisis management, preferably with public school districts.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Transportation Routes and Schedule

  • Assist with oversight of all regular education and special education routes
  • Coordinate transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs.

Policy, Reports, and Laws

  • Assist with district''s student discipline policies and communicate to students expected behavior when using district transportation.
  • Enforce safety standards that conform to state, federal, and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventative safety.
  • Assist with developing training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation of transportation department.
  • Comply with all applicable personnel policies.
  • Assist with oversight and compliance of TEA regulations, CDL requirements, and state inspections.
  • Prepare data necessary to process transportation payroll.

Budget and Inventory

  • Assist with budget preparation and departmental purchasing
  • Assist with fleet replacement planning and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Assist with maintaining inventory of supplies and parts to avoid ordering delays.
  • Assist with recommendations for disposal of obsolete or worn-out vehicles and equipment.

Student Management

  • Assist with student behavior reports and communicate results to parents, admin, and drivers on disciplinary issues.
  • Enforce student discipline and suspension of riding privileges for any student who violates rules and regulations.

Personnel

  • Assist with assigning bus drivers to routes and find substitutes as needed.
  • Assist with recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation of all transportation personnel and make sound recommendations about placement, assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Assist with evaluations and employee job performance to ensure effectiveness.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise and evaluate performance of shop foreman, dispatcher, parts manger, bus drivers, bus monitors, and transportation secretary.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting, carrying, stooping, kneeling and reaching.

Motion: Moderate walking, standing, climbing, Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent districtwide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to conduct on-site inspections of all vehicle repair and maintenance operations. Coordinate district efforts in crises events.
