Position Summary

The primary location of this position is on-site in Cullowhee, NC. This position is designated as being exempt from the State of North Carolina Human Resources Act (EHRA).

The Assistant Director of Sport Programs leads the daily administration of the university's Intramural Sports program and serves as Camp Director for Lil' Cats Summer Camp, overseeing program planning, scheduling, logistics, marketing, and on-site operations. This role recruits, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates student employees, including supervisors, officials, program assistants, interns, and camp counselors, while helping ensure high-quality participant experiences and a safe, well-managed environment.

The position is responsible for risk management practices, participant conduct processes, program budgets, equipment purchasing and inventory control, rule and policy updates, and the use of software systems to support registration, communication, and program operations.

The Assistant Director also contributes to strategic assessment, reports, and action planning; supports evening and weekend activities; serves as a departmental resource on minors-on-campus guidelines; and assists with broader Campus Recreation and Wellness initiatives, events, and related program areas as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of recreational sport programming, camp operations, and student development principles, with the ability to administer programs that support participant engagement, learning, and safety.
  • Skill in recruiting, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating student employees and other front-line staff in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members, and to handle customer service issues, conduct matters, and policy interpretation with professionalism and sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of risk management practices, program logistics, budgeting, equipment oversight, and operational procedures needed to support safe, organized, and efficient program delivery.
  • Ability to use technology and data to support program operations, including scheduling, registration, reporting, assessment, marketing, and continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Interested candidates must already be legally authorized to work in the United States and will not require any immigration sponsorship or support.
  • Bachelor's Degree in physical education, sport management, health education, health promotion or related field. Degree must be from an accredited institution.
  • Adult CPR/AED and First Aid certified through American Red Cross or ability to obtain during first year of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in physical education, sport management, health education, health promotion or related field
  • Previous experience in training officials in various team sports
  • Experience working as an official in one or more team sports at the high school level or above
  • Experience as a Camp Director working with youth
