The Assistant Director of Residential Life and Housing - Staff Training and Development supports the residential student experience through the recruitment, training, supervision, and development of residential life staff. This live-on position oversees staff training initiatives, promotes student engagement, and assists with the daily operations of residence halls. The role provides support for crisis response, student concerns, and emergency situations through participation in the Administrator On-Call rotation. Additionally, the Assistant Director collaborates with campus partners to enhance student wellbeing, safety, and retention through residential programming and support services. The position also contributes to departmental operations, assessment efforts, and leadership initiatives that strengthen the residential community.

Primary Purpose

The Assistant Director of Residential Life and Housing - Staff Training and Development is a live-on professional staff position responsible for supporting the residential student experience through the recruitment, training, supervision, and development of residential life staff and programs. The position plays a key role in supporting student engagement, residential operations, crisis response, and the overall administration of the residential life program.

The Assistant Director participates in the Administrator On-Call rotation and provides after-hours operational support and response to residential and campus emergencies as required. The position also supports departmental operations, staff development initiatives, student support efforts, and residential programming designed to enhance student success, engagement, and retention.

Residence within assigned campus housing is required as a condition of the position.

Essential Duties

Staff Supervision, Training, and Development

  • Assist with the supervision, training, scheduling, and evaluation of residential life staff, including graduate and paraprofessional staff.
  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate training programs for Resident Assistants and other residential life staff, including summer and winter training programs.
  • Coordinate and facilitate residential life, all staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Support the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and ongoing development of residential life staff.
  • Develop and maintain evaluation and accountability processes for residential life staff.

Residential Operations and Student Support

  • Serve as a live-on professional staff member within the residential community and provide support for the day-to-day operations of the residence halls.
  • Participate in the Administrator On-Call rotation and respond to residential and campus emergencies as required.
  • Provide support related to crisis response, incident management, student concerns, and parent/family communications.
  • Assist with student conduct processes, behavioral interventions, and student support efforts as assigned.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support student wellbeing, safety, and residential community standards.
  • Maintain and update residential life policies, procedures, manuals, and operational materials.

Programming, Engagement, and Assessment

  • Support the development and implementation of residential programming and engagement initiatives designed to enhance the student experience and support student retention.
  • Assist with assessment efforts related to residential life programs, student engagement, and community needs.
  • Coordinate departmental events, staff recognition initiatives, and student engagement activities.
  • Support admissions and student recruitment initiatives related to residential life and housing.

Campus Engagement and Leadership

  • Serve on departmental, divisional, and College committees as assigned.
  • Support divisional and departmental initiatives related to student engagement and residential education.
  • Advise student organizations and leadership initiatives connected to residential life.

Occasional Duties

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Residential Life and Housing/Assistant Dean of Students.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education or related field. Experience:
  • A minimum of three (3) years of full time, post Master's degree full-time experience in residence life or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising professional and/or paraprofessional staff.
  • Experience with crisis management/response.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English / Spanish (fluent in speaking and writing).

Position Details

FLSA Exempt Salary Grade 12NC Full Time / Part Time Full-time Proposed Starting Salary Range $70,000-$75,000 Work Schedule

Full-time, 35 hours/week

7 hour work day (typically 8:30am-4:30pm)

Includes some evenings, weekends and/or holidays hours as required.

Plus on-call responsibilities.
