Location: Portsmouth, NH. WSL is located steps from Portsmouth’s Market Square and Prescott Park, behind the Strawbery Banke Museum.

Job Summary: As the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), you will provide clinical leadership and support nursing operations while working closely with the Director of Nursing (DON) to ensure high-quality, person-centered care for residents and their families.

This role is ideal for a Registered Nurse with strong leadership skills and a passion for dementia care. The successful candidate understands that exceptional care includes meaningful engagement, family partnership, and preserving each resident’s dignity and quality of life. Experience in social work, case management, counseling, or related human services fields is highly valued, as this role requires supporting residents, families, and staff in delivering truly person-centered care.

Key Responsibilities:

Resident Care

  • Coordinate healthcare management and clinical oversight for residents, ensuring medical records are accurate, complete, and maintained in compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Resident Care Manager to develop and maintain resident care plans, conduct assessments, and participate in resident and family care conferences.
  • Facilitate continuity of care by providing clinical guidance and support to residents, families, and staff.
  • Maintain and oversee the community Infection Prevention and Control Program in collaboration with leadership.

Leadership

  • Assume direct leadership responsibility for the nursing department in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
  • Effectively manage difficult conversations involving employee performance, resident and family concerns, staffing challenges, and operational issues.
  • Foster collaborative relationships across departments to promote resident-centered care and operational excellence.
  • Model and promote a positive organizational culture consistent with the community's mission and values.

Staff Supervision

  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing and Training & Development team to ensure staff receive required orientation, education, competency validation, and ongoing training.
  • Oversee staffing and scheduling processes as needed to ensure appropriate coverage and quality resident care.
  • Provide direct clinical support during staffing emergencies and serve as a resource to nursing staff.

Supervisor of The All Points Program

  • Provide oversight of resident assessments, enrollment processes, care planning, and documentation for residents participating in The All Points Program.
  • Lead, supervise, and support The All Points Team in delivering exceptional dementia care programming and services.
  • Provide education, guidance, and support to residents, families, and staff regarding dementia care and disease progression.
  • Develop and maintain systems for tracking resident social care plans, engagement, and outcomes.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of interventions and modify approaches to optimize resident success and well-being.

Compliance and Regulatory Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and community regulations related to resident care and documentation.
  • Assume the responsibilities of the Director of Nursing during periods of absence.
  • Work collaboratively with residents, families, staff, and leadership to support community goals and resident outcomes.
  • Maintain a regular onsite presence.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities assigned to support the mission and operations of the community.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Completion of an accredited nursing program.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or related human services field preferred.
  • Current experience as a Registered Nurse in a senior living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, or related healthcare setting.
  • Minimum three (3) years of nursing leadership or management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals living with dementia and supporting their families.
  • Experience with staff scheduling, workforce management, and clinical operations preferred.

Licensure, Registration, and Certification

  • Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license or valid Compact RN License.
  • Current CPR certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • MoCA Certification or ability to obtain and maintain certification.
  • Dementia Live® Coach Certification or ability to obtain within an established timeframe.

Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, with a 24-hour on-call rotation every third week/weekend.

Rate: $100,000 – $110,000 annually
