Description

Summary:

The Assistant Director of Bands, Drill Writer and Inventory Technician is responsible for the general operations and administration of the Bands Program. The Assistant Director of Bands reports to the Director of Bands. The successful candidate will assist with the administration, instruction, recruitment, and daily operation of the nationally recognized Marching Maroon and White Band, concert ensembles, and athletic bands.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create, arrange, and adapt music for the Marching Maroon and White Band, basketball band, pep bands, and other university ensembles.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Bands on repertoire selection and show design.
  • Assist with game-day, travel, and performance logistics.
  • Conduct ensembles and classes as assigned by the Director of Bands.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.):

  • Bachelors Degree in Music Education, Music Performance, Conducting, Educational Leadership, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. A Masters Degree is preferred.
  • Three (3) years of successful experience teaching instrumental music at the secondary or collegiate level, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in music arranging for marching bands, athletic bands, and/or concert ensembles.
  • Proficiency with music notation software such as Sibelius, Finale, Dorico, or equivalent.
  • Experience assisting with band operations, student recruitment, and ensemble administration.
  • Experience with HBCU marching band traditions and performance practices is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in student recruitment, retention, and mentorship is preferred.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required.

  • Knowledge of band rehearsal techniques and instructional methodologies.
  • Knowledge of music arranging, orchestration, and score preparation.
  • Knowledge of marching band drill design and production.
  • Knowledge of inventory control and equipment management.
  • Knowledge of student development and academic support practices.
