Description
The Assistant Director of Athletics shall report to the Director of Athletics. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the College financial system and related administrative procedures; maintain strict fiscal responsibility, actively manage athletic budgets, and ensure that coaches and staff strictly adhere to institutional financial policies.
- Design, implement, and manage athletic fundraising initiatives, donor programs, corporate sponsorships, booster club activities, and alumni outreach to secure external revenue for athletic programs, facility upgrades, and student-athlete scholarships.
- Utilize exceptional communication and public relations skills, demonstrating the ability to handle difficult situations effectively while maintaining a high level of diplomacy, tact, and professionalism.
- Oversee comprehensive game-day management responsibilities, including the coordination and scheduling of sports officials and full operational execution of all scheduled home athletic events.
- Assist in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment across all sponsored athletic programs; supervise the maintenance, upkeep, and safety of athletic complexes, facilities, and fields, while communicating proactively with the Athletic Director regarding necessary improvements.
- Ensure strict departmental compliance by following, enforcing, and staying current with all national, conference, and regional regulations.
- Provide leadership that cultivates discipline, accountability, and character among student-athletes, ensuring all mentorship and disciplinary actions align with the NMJC Student Handbook and the NMJC Student-Athlete Handbook.
- Plan, organize, and execute all required NMJC documentation for team travel, including post-travel documentation and financial reconciliation.
- Organize and engage athletic teams in meaningful community service activities and youth sports camps during both the fall and spring semesters, cultivating local relationships to enhance the vision that NMJC is the Community's College.
- Assist in the strategic management, growth, and development of athletic programming in alignment with the NMJC Athletic Strategic Plan.
- Fulfill institutional service requirements by actively participating on working committees, attending all required College meetings, and completing all assigned professional development within the established deadlines.
- Complete all tasks and assignments stated in this job description within the 12-month contract time frame, including supporting coaches in building team rosters that meet institutional expectations and completing necessary paperwork for student-athlete admission.
- Participate, both as a professional and a representative of New Mexico Junior College, in community affairs, donor stewardship, and public relations events.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required to meet the operational needs of New Mexico Junior College.
- Nothing contained herein shall limit the President in assigning the employee to any of the various College activities for which he/she would be qualified in order to meet the needs of New Mexico Junior College.
Qualifications
- A Bachelors Degree from a regionally accredited institution with at least one year of collegiate coaching experience is required.
- Previous experience in managing and athletic administration is preferred.
- Previous experience or demonstrated success in athletic fundraising, booster relations, donor cultivation, or corporate sponsorship acquisition is preferred.
- The successful candidate must have good public relations skills, excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multi-task situations, and the ability to work in a fast-paced operation on a daily basis.
Additional Qualifications
- Proficiency in budget management, fiscal accountability, and standard institutional accounting processes.
- Ability to identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with donors, corporate partners, and community stakeholders to generate athletic revenue.
- High level of interpersonal communication skills to navigate sensitive, high-pressure, or complex situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Strong working knowledge of collegiate athletic compliance rules, event management, and facility operations.
- Ability to lead, discipline, and guide a diverse group of student-athletes in alignment with institutional policies.

Wellness Program-NMJC offers a campus Wellness Program to promote individual wellness among members of the campus community through education and prevention.
