Duties Description The Division of Correctional Industries, more commonly known as Corcraft, is the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) industrial training program. Corcraft's mission is to employ incarcerated individuals in real work situations, produce quality goods and services at competitive prices and deliver on time at a minimal cost to the taxpayer. The Correctional Industries program is a voluntary program available to incarcerated individuals that supports DOCCS's overall mission by teaching work skills, work ethic, and responsibility in preparation for a successful re-entry to the community upon release. Corcraft employs approximately 230 civilian staff and 975 incarcerated individuals across 26 correctional facilities statewide. Corcraft's manufacturing lines and product offerings include prescription eyewear, chemical and janitorial products, textiles and institutional clothing, printed forms and logbooks, license plates, metal and wood furniture, aluminum casted items, signage for roads and highways, specialty steel products, and office panel systems.
The DOCCS Division of Industries is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Director for Correctional Industries Operations to join Corcraft's leadership team. The position reports to the Director of Correctional Industries and Industrial Training and is responsible for overseeing all manufacturing, abatement and distribution operations (including warehousing and delivery) statewide throughout the division. Corcraft has manufacturing operations in 14 correctional facilities, an abatement program in 9 correctional facilities, and 6 distribution locations throughout the state with multiple programs operating in the same facilities.
The Assistant Director for Correctional Industries Operations directly supervises Engineering, Quality Control, Production Planning and Control, Distribution and Warehousing, and all Industrial and Senior Industrial Superintendents (manufacturing plant managers) statewide. The position is a key member of the Corcraft leadership teams and provides expertise and guidance to all areas of Corcraft.
The duties for the position include, but are not limited to the following:
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). (Please see below for further information).
Non-Competitive: ten years of experience in the overall management and supervision of manufacturing operations in a factory setting. This experience must have included overall responsibility for manufacturing of three or more product lines at five or more separate plant locations. A bachelor's degree may substitute for four years of the required experience; or an associate's degree may substitute for two years of the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to complete an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
