Job Title: Assistant Director - Child Nutrition Department

Department: Food Service

Reports To: Director of Food Service

Salary Grade: S654 starting $77,669

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary:

Assistant Director duties include but are not limited to overseeing summer breakfast and lunch programs, catering, staff development, personnel management, monthly manager's meetings, department hand book, Supper program and the supervision of school cafeterias. To assist the Director in the overall operation of the Child Nutrition department.

What You''ll Be Doing: (Responsibilities)

  • Assume responsibility for the Child Nutrition department in the absence of the Director.
  • Interviews candidates for site-based position openings and completes paperwork for hiring and paying personnel for the purpose of providing documentation for District
  • Work with Area Supervisors in adequately staffing all sites daily based on departmental need and availability of substitutes.
  • Establishes procedures to implement employee contract agreements, progressive discipline, and formal grievances
  • Review timekeeping/payroll records and develop staffing formulas and work schedules
  • Provides orientation and training for new managers and staff
  • Maintain employee handbook.
  • Evaluate Area Supervisors and central office employees
  • Administers special grants and programs such as Fresh Fruit & Vegetable, Supper Program, Summer Program and Snack program.
  • Provides leadership in developing employee recognition program for the purpose of maintaining positive employee morale
  • Conducts food tests with students for the purpose of gathering information, regarding student preferences in order to build a great nutritional program with high standards for quality and nutrition..
  • Supports the health and nutrition awareness programs for the purpose of ensuring the mission of the District and the Child Nutrition Department
  • Works with vendors for food and equipment for the purpose of acquiring the best products at the best price for the District.
  • Mentors supervisors, and managers for the purpose of providing support and accountability to the District.
  • Oversee the software used in foodservice operations.
  • Develop a model preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Maintains capital equipment inventory.
  • Visit school kitchens regularly and evaluate operations using department policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate the financial performance of site school nutrition programs.
  • Conduct administrative and on-site reviews to ascertain compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations concerning free and reduced-price meals, nutritional standards, and sanitation and safety.
  • Promote a positive public image of the program and maintain good relations with the community.
  • Monitor the purchase requests and supply orders from school cafeterias and monitor cafeteria inventory stock levels and assist staff with reorder functions.
  • Develop and maintain regular and effective communication within the Food Service Department and between Food Service and other departments.
  • Maintain standards of sanitation and safety in compliance with local and state health regulations.
  • Identify and resolve food service operational problems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

To Be Successful at This Job, You''ll Need To: (Qualifications)

  • Bachelor Degree in Foods, Volume Feeding, Institutional Management, Nutrition, Dietetics or related fields.
  • Registered Dietician
  • Supervisory experience of a large school food service organization.
  • Valid Driver's license and use of an automobile.
  • Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Terms of Employment:

Length of work year: In person; 12 months, 5 days per week, 7.5 hours per day
