Position Summary

The Assistant Deli Manager supports the Deli Manager in overseeing daily deli department operations, ensuring excellent customer service, food quality, safety compliance, and department profitability. This position assists with supervising associates, maintaining merchandising standards, managing inventory, controlling shrink, and driving sales while promoting a clean, safe, and customer-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities Department Operations

  • Assist in managing the daily operations of the deli department.
  • Support production planning and execution to ensure product availability and freshness.
  • Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering to maintain proper stock levels.
  • Ensure products are properly prepared, packaged, labeled, displayed, and rotated.
  • Help coordinate department activities to meet sales and customer demand.

Customer Service

  • Deliver exceptional customer service and create a positive shopping experience.
  • Assist customers with product selection, special orders, and deli inquiries.
  • Address and resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Promote department products through suggestive selling and product knowledge.

Merchandising & Sales

  • Maintain attractive, well-stocked, and organized displays.
  • Ensure promotional programs, signage, and pricing are executed accurately.
  • Assist with implementation of seasonal and sales-driving merchandising initiatives.
  • Monitor sales performance and identify opportunities for growth.

Food Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and company policies.
  • Monitor food preparation, storage, temperature logs, and handling procedures.
  • Maintain department cleanliness, equipment sanitation, and safety standards.
  • Ensure associates follow safe work practices and operational procedures.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Assist with training, coaching, and developing deli associates.
  • Provide daily direction and support to department team members.
  • Promote a positive work environment built on teamwork, accountability, and respect.
  • Assist with scheduling and labor management efforts.
  • Serve as acting department leader in the Deli Manager''s absence.

Financial Performance

  • Assist in managing department expenses, inventory, and shrink reduction efforts.
  • Support achievement of sales, labor, and profitability goals.
  • Monitor productivity and operational efficiency.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve department performance and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous retail, grocery, food service, or deli experience.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Basic knowledge of food preparation, merchandising, and inventory control.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred

  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience working in a deli, prepared foods, restaurant, or grocery environment.
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations, ordering, and labor management.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to work around hot equipment, sharp tools, and refrigerated environments.
  • Manual dexterity necessary for food preparation and handling tasks.
