Assistant Controller | Accounting Manager

Overview

The hire client is a boutique alternative investments firm based in San Francisco’s Presidio with a team comprised of seasoned investment and operational professionals. They are seeking an Assistant Controller / Accounting Manager to support the firm’s finance and operations function across its investment platform, management company, and affiliated entities.

This role is ideal for someone with a strong accounting foundation who wants exposure to a broad range of operational and finance responsibilities within an entrepreneurial investment firm environment. The position will report to the Controller and work closely with the broader finance, investment, and operations teams.

The role is less focused on technical fund accounting preparation and more focused on oversight, coordination, operational execution, cash management, investor reporting support, and helping ensure the finance function runs efficiently and accurately.

Primary Responsibilities

Finance & Operations

  • Support day-to-day accounting and finance operations across the management company and investment entities
  • Assist with cash management, wires, liquidity tracking, and transaction coordination
  • Review vendor invoices, expense allocations, and payment processes
  • Coordinate operational workflows related to investments, funding activity, and entity management
  • Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation

Fund Administration Oversight

  • Serve as a point of coordination with external fund administrators
  • Review reporting packages, capital activity, and deliverables prepared by third parties
  • Assist with audit and tax coordination processes
  • Track deadlines and ensure external providers receive required information on a timely basis
  • Help manage investor-related operational processes

Investor Reporting & IR Support

  • Help maintain track record materials, performance summaries, and IR reporting decks
  • Support ad hoc investor relations reporting requests
  • Assist with preparation and review of investor-facing materials
  • Maintain supporting data and backup for performance and reporting materials
  • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure reporting materials are accurate, current, and consistent

Process Improvement & Infrastructure

  • Help improve operational processes, internal organization, and workflow efficiency
  • Maintain and organize finance, reporting, and document management systems
  • Assist with implementation of new tools and operational improvements
  • Support development of scalable procedures and internal controls

Team & Cross-Functional Support

  • Work closely with investment, operations, legal, and external service provider teams
  • Assist with special projects and ad hoc operational initiatives
  • Help maintain consistency, accuracy, and responsiveness across finance-related processes

     

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in accounting, finance operations, fund administration oversight, investor reporting support, or public accounting
  • Experience working with investment firms, private funds, family offices, or alternative asset managers preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and follow-through
  • Proficiency in Excel and general financial systems
  • CPA or public accounting background is a plus, but not required
