Job Description

The Assistant Cheer Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Cheer Coach with the leadership, development, coordination, recruiting, instruction, and day-to-day operation of the Itawamba Community College Cheer Program. The Assistant Cheer Coach supports student-athlete academic success, personal development, and well-being while ensuring compliance with all national, state, conference, and Institutional rules, regulations, and policies. The Assistant Cheer Coach assists in preparing and directing the cheer team for athletic events, public relations appearances, community engagement activities, competitions, and postseason events, as applicable. Coaches may also be assigned additional institutional responsibilities and assist with College events and activities as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Cheer Coach in supervising and directing all aspects of the cheer program.
  • Be knowledgeable of and abide by National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC), and Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) rules and regulations.
  • Assist with the recruitment, evaluation, and retention of student-athletes while maintaining a professional and positive image of the College.
  • Assist with planning, organizing, and conducting tryouts, practices, performances, competitions, and other program activities.
  • Provide instruction and supervision in cheerleading skills, including choreography, cheers, stunts, tumbling, conditioning, and game-day performance preparation.
  • Assist in monitoring student-athlete academic progress, class attendance, and progress toward graduation.
  • Monitor student-athlete conduct and behavior in the classroom, student housing, and at College-related events both on and off campus, and apply appropriate discipline when necessary.
  • Assist with room checks, curfew enforcement, and academic support programs for student-athletes, as assigned.
  • Assist in ensuring that all practices and activities are conducted in a manner that promotes student-athlete safety, well-being, and skill development.
  • Assist with coordinating travel, performances, competitions, and other program-related activities.
  • Assist with the inventory, maintenance, organization, and security of equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
  • Assist with monitoring cheer facilities and promptly report maintenance needs or safety concerns to the Head Coach.
  • Secure all facilities following practices, performances, and events.
  • Assist with coordinating physical examinations, medical documentation, and other student-athlete eligibility requirements.
  • Assist the Head Coach and Director of Athletics with drug screenings, medical claims, insurance documentation, and eligibility reporting, as assigned.
  • Assist with fundraising activities and help identify opportunities to support the cheer program.
  • Serve as a positive representative of the College and cheer program through public appearances, community engagement, and promotional activities.
  • Attend institutional, conference, and professional development meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
