Primary Purpose:
Direct, manage, and oversee the overall program of instrumental music at the Middle School level. Simultaneously serve as the primary Assistant Director for the High School band program, assisting with the marching band, concert bands, and other high school instrumental activities. Provide students with opportunities to participate in extracurricular band activities while ensuring compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Collaborate closely with the Head Band Director to ensure seamless vertical alignment of the instrumental music curriculum from grades 6 through 12.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate
- Demonstrated competency in instrumental music
- Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automatic external defibrillator (AED) certificate
- Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of the overall operation, pedagogy, and curriculum of a comprehensive middle and high school instrumental music program.
- Knowledge of brass, woodwind, and/or percussion pedagogy and marching band instructional techniques.
- Ability to manage instructional materials, sheet music, equipment, and instrument inventory.Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
- Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing middle and high school band activities.
- Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to implement district policies and administrative procedures.
- Ability to manage budget and personnel
Experience:
- Successful teaching, student teaching, or assistant band directing experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Planning & Instruction
- Direct and instruct middle school instrumental performers, including concert bands, beginner instrumental classes, soloists, and ensembles.
- Assist the Head Band Director with all aspects of the High School band program, including marching band (rehearsals, drill design, music preparation), concert bands, pep band, and solo/ensemble events.
- Establish performance standards, enforce academic eligibility requirements, and verify student eligibility for all middle school and high school band events.
- Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, community events, football games, pep rallies, parades, and UIL activities.
- Develop and implement lesson plans that reflect accommodations for individual student differences and align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
- Maintain vertical alignment of instrumental curriculum alongside the Head Band Director to ensure middle school students are adequately prepared for high school band.
- Support and collaborate with the Band Booster Club to promote and enhance the district-wide band program.
Budget, Inventory, & Operations
- Ensure program cost-effectiveness and manage middle school band funds wisely.
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of all fixed assets, sheet music, uniforms, and school-owned instruments at both the middle and high school levels.
- Oversee and schedule the cleaning, repair, and proper storage of all middle school band equipment.
- Assist with logistics for out-of-town trips, including coordinating student transportation, meals, lodging, and equipment trailers.
Student Management
- Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbooks for both campus levels.
- Supervise and accompany students on out-of-town trips, football games, contests, and other extracurricular activities.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Communication & Professional Relations
- Establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, administrative staff, and community members.
- Participate in professional development activities to improve leadership and instructional skills.
Other
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

- Environment: Frequent districtwide travel; occasional statewide travel; work is both indoors (classroom and auditorium) and outdoors (marching band field, stadium); exposure to extreme temperatures and inclement weather, humidity, and prolonged, direct sunlight; work on uneven or slippery surfaces; frequent exposure to noise
