Position Summary
The Assistant Bakery Manager supports the Bakery Manager in overseeing all aspects of bakery department operations, including production, merchandising, inventory management, food safety, customer service, labor utilization, and associate development. This position helps ensure the department consistently delivers fresh, high-quality bakery products while achieving sales, shrink, and profitability goals.
Key Responsibilities Department Operations
- Assist in managing the daily operations of the Bakery Department.
- Support bakery production schedules to ensure product availability and freshness.
- Ensure displays, cases, and sales floor presentations are attractive, fully stocked, and maintained to company standards.
- Monitor product quality, freshness, rotation, and code dating.
- Assist with ordering, receiving, inventory control, and product replenishment.
- Maintain department cleanliness, organization, and operational readiness.
Customer Service
- Deliver exceptional customer service and create a welcoming shopping experience.
- Assist customers with product selection, special orders, and custom cake inquiries.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Promote bakery products and seasonal offerings through suggestive selling.
- Foster a customer-focused culture among department associates.
Leadership & Team Development
- Assist with recruiting, training, coaching, and developing bakery associates.
- Provide daily direction and work assignments to department team members.
- Support performance management and accountability initiatives.
- Encourage teamwork, engagement, and a positive work environment.
- Lead by example through professionalism, dependability, and strong customer service.
Product Quality & Food Safety
- Ensure bakery products meet company quality and freshness standards.
- Monitor food safety, sanitation, and proper product handling procedures.
- Maintain compliance with all health department regulations and company policies.
- Ensure cleaning schedules, temperature logs, and food safety documentation are completed accurately.
- Support department readiness for inspections, audits, and food safety reviews.
Merchandising & Inventory Management
- Assist with inventory management to maximize sales and reduce shrink.
- Monitor product movement, sales trends, and inventory levels.
- Verify pricing, signage, and promotional displays for accuracy.
- Support merchandising initiatives to drive department sales.
- Help identify opportunities to improve product assortment and presentation.
Financial Performance
- Assist in achieving department sales, margin, labor, and shrink goals.
- Monitor product waste and support shrink reduction strategies.
- Support labor planning and productivity initiatives.
- Review department performance metrics and assist with action planning.
- Help maintain expense control and operational efficiency.
Qualifications Preferred Experience
- Previous bakery, food service, grocery retail, or fresh foods experience preferred.
- Prior supervisory, lead, or management experience preferred.
- Knowledge of bakery production, merchandising, and inventory management preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to lead and motivate a team.
- Knowledge of bakery operations, food safety, and sanitation standards.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
