Description
The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as the legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking a dedicated and experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General on the real estate legal team within the Department of General Services (DGS). The Assistant Attorney General position will support the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), with a primary focus on the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation (MALPF).
This position offers a unique opportunity to play a central role in one of the nation’s leading agricultural preservation programs. MALPF acquires perpetual agricultural preservation easements that protect prime farmland and woodland from development, helping to sustain Maryland’s agricultural economy and rural landscape for future generations.
The selected attorney will advise MDA and MALPF on all aspects of easement acquisition and long-term stewardship. Responsibilities include drafting and reviewing complex real estate documents such as easements, deeds, title reports and commitments, mortgages, right-of-ways, surveys, plats, and boundary descriptions to ensure transactions are legally sound and aligned with the State’s interests.
DGS is responsible for a wide range of critical functions, including the procurement of commodities and services, energy, facilities maintenance, information technology, leased space and the design, construction, acquisition and disposition of real property for the State of Maryland. The legal team currently includes 12 attorneys, led by the Principal Counsel and Deputy Principal Counsel, and is supported by a Management Associate.
If you are passionate about land conservation, public service, and complex real estate transactions, and want to make a meaningful impact on the preservation of Maryland’s agricultural resources, we encourage you to apply.
Experience: The ideal candidate for this role will have at least five years of experience, excellent research and writing skills, and a demonstrated ability to handle complex real estate transactions and resolve title-related issues. The attorney must be proficient in reviewing and interpreting legal descriptions, including the ability to identify and resolve errors, and must be comfortable with reviewing surveys and recognizing issues reflected in survey work.
The successful candidate will have a proven record of providing effective client counsel, preferably in a real estate-focused legal environment. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills are essential, as is the ability to manage competing priorities and a high-volume workload in a fast-paced legal setting. Admission to the Maryland Bar, or ability to waive in, is required.
This position requires a highly organized individual who can manage a significant volume of transactions and maintain accurate, up-to-date tracking systems, including the consistent use of spreadsheets. The attorney will generate a substantial amount of correspondence and legal documentation and must be able to work efficiently and accurately within strict timelines.
The attorney must be comfortable interacting with a wide range of stakeholders, including farmers, private attorneys, county administrators, MALPF staff, other AAGs, surveyors and title agents. Experience and familiarity with land conservation, agricultural preservation programs, and title insurance is strongly preferred.
Submission: Applicants must submit a resume, cover letter, writing sample, and a list of three professional references, including at least one current or former supervisor.
