Scope of Job

To generate maximum publicity and recognition for the department of intercollegiate athletics through strategic media relations while managing game day statistical operations. Ensure the University and its athletic achievements are presented in a consistent and favorable way to a wide ranging audience in addition to performing duties related to providing a consistent and continuing public relations program for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, primarily by maintaining a readily accessible, accurate and useful news and information service.

Description of Duties
• Directs the development and implementation of public relations strategies for the department of intercollegiate athletics and ensures press releases and other related items of interest are identified, developed, and posted on the department's website.
• Directs post game media coverage for all high visibility sports.
• Plans, develops, and implements short and long-range event and game day strategies working closely with the external marketing and development staff.
• Develops goals and objectives for sports information operations and implements changes as needed.
• Assumes the responsibilities of the Associate AD for Communications in their absence.
• Directs updates to local, state, and national media inquiries to promote the image of the university, department, and/or assigned program(s).
• Serves as an advisor and liaison to the head coaches and student-athletes for communications and media relations activities. Serves as initial contact for media for assigned programs, providing information as required on routine matters.
• Develops game day and sport specific publications including but not limited to media guides, game programs, game day notes.
• Develops and writes press releases, news/feature articles and profiles of coaches, staff, and student-athletes and other related items of interest for internal and external audiences and stakeholders.
• Assists with the maintenance of department's website and social media accounts.
• Manages game day staff charged with all data analytics, data recording and game day operations for sporting event.
• Serves as a key member of the Intercollegiate Athletic department's communications staff, assisting in the development of integrated strategies that forward the department's mission.
• Participates in the hiring, training, and evaluation of assigned staff.
• Assists with the maintenance of archival information, records, photos, statistics, etc.
• Edits video highlights, interviews and photos for the athletic website and social media for completeness and accuracy.
• Serves as spokesperson for the department or assigned program(s) with news media and general public in the absence of department head or assigned supervisor.
• Monitors the formulation and coordination of projects or event specifications, requirements for contracts and proposals, and associated documents.
• Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations.
• Oversees and participates in the hiring, training, and evaluation of staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or sports management or a related field from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications

Required Experience

Four (4) years of professional related experience in the athletics communications field.

Preferred Experience

Experience in collegiate athletics communications. Video editing, statistical software, and digital photography experience.

Equipment

Use of standard office equipment. Successful applicants will be knowledgeable in Statcrew/NCAA Live Stats, Final Cut, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign & Premier, as well as have some knowledge of HTML code.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel, night and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Strong writing, editing, computer and oral communication skills are required. Strong communication and political acumen skills. Thorough, strong project management skills. Outstanding interpersonal and public relations skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community and wide range of constituencies, including the corporate community and institutional marketing personnel. Fluency with both Mac and PC operating systems. Understand the nuances of game day presentation. Demonstrated knowledge of electronic sports news media needs. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with coaches, administrators, faculty, and students. Ability to work under the pressure of very tight deadlines. Ability to work a flexible schedule including frequent evenings and weekends to support events. Excellent collaboration and relationship building skills.
