Job Title

An employee in this class is responsible for maintaining geospatial information to enhance the Public Utilities' GIS system.

Duties and Responsibilities/Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Creates, modifies, and maintains the utility assets in GIS, from approved site plan to as-built record drawing delivery.

Processes field change requests to improve the integrity of the GIS data, ensuring spatial and attribute accuracy.

Utilizes knowledge of utility systems to identify and correct deficiencies in the GIS inventory.

Develops, supports, and maintains GIS data and data management workflows.

Creates and maintains cartographic maps and graphics.

Fulfills internal and external information requests, including but not limited to as-builts, plat research, and GIS data exports.

Recommends and participates in GIS process improvements.

Troubleshoots and participates in GIS problem resolution.

Creates and maintains documentation of procedures utilized to complete projects.

Provides general GIS customer service, both internally and externally.

Research industry trends, solutions, and best practices.

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of ArcMap 10.X, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online.
  • Knowledge of Trimble mapping software and hardware.
  • Knowledge and experience with water distribution systems, sanitary sewer collection systems, and stormwater systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and ability to apply them.
  • Ability to research.
  • Strong critical thinking and analysis skills.
  • Ability to write and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction, record, and plat drawings.
  • Ability to operate modern office technology.
  • Ability to effectively work both independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and coordinate deadlines.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing best practices, trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to provide consultation and serve as a subject matter expert.

Desirable Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in geography/geographic/geospatial information systems (GIS), civil/environmental engineering, or computer science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • PLS or Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, sitting, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate a computer terminal, to use measuring devices to inspect small parts, to prepare and analyze data and figures, and to determine neatness, accuracy, and thoroughness of completed work.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
  • Work has exposure to environmental conditions.
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. construction areas, light traffic).
