Job Description

The Art Studio Coordinator produces and manages a high-quality, educational, self-sufficient, and creative art studio environment where children and their adults can create art projects that reflect their learning and time spent at the Children's Discovery Museum. The art studio curriculum follows a Teaching Artistic Behavior (TAB) model. The educational theme of the Art Studio changes monthly. The Art Studio Coordinator will also develop and implement free programing on Saturdays and occasionally special programing for family events at the museum. The Art Studio Coordinator also collaborates with partners to advance art programming at the Museum.

This part-time position will not exceed 20 hours per week. The Art Studio Coordinator must be available for free programming on Saturdays. Occasionally, family events may be in the evenings. Schedule is flexible during the week.

Since 1994 the Children's Discovery Museum has been inspiring a love of learning through the power of play. The Museum is a three-story, 34,000 square foot LEED certified building with numerous hands-on, interactive exhibit galleries. The mission of the Children's Discovery Museum is to nurture the whole-child by encouraging critical thinking, engaging creative expression, and stimulating curiosity through interactive play. Our high-quality exhibits, programs, and partnerships serve children and families in Central Illinois and beyond.

Duties/Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborate with other professional educators to provide quality art-making opportunities.
  • Decide, create, prepare, and implement monthly themes and 5-6 activities that correlate to the theme.
  • Set up, clean up and maintenance of activities in the Art Studio space, as well as directions of how the space should be maintained by floor staff.
  • Purchase and manage supply needs.
  • Manage supply budget.
  • Design and implement Saturday Free programming.
  • Design and implement art related programing for special events at the museum and assist with Community Events as needed.
  • Train experience crew, volunteers, and interns on how to maintain Art Studio.
  • Creating and maintaining relationships with community partners to assist in offering quality programing in the Art Studio.
  • Follow directions of the Director of Education.
  • Coordinate schedule with Education Director and communicate changes in availability.
  • Be a positive and responsible ambassador of the Children's Discovery Museum.
  • Additional tasks as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • Must have previous experience working with children.
  • Must have a Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to work 20 hours per week, including Saturdays, with occasional afternoons and evenings for scheduled events.
  • Graduation from a college or university with a degree preferred or classroom hours in Art Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Child Development, or a related major supplemented by relevant work experience; or any other schooling, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must have a firm grasp of a variety of art concepts and be able to convey them in a way that is accessible to all children.
  • Fully versed in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Able to take and follow directions from the Director of Education.
  • Proactive communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain and be a part of a respectful classroom environment.
  • Must be comfortable with having a role of responsibility, working independently, and exhibit initiative.
  • Have a team-oriented attitude and exhibit a collaborative work ethic.
