The Area Coordinator is a professional position in the SUNY Geneseo Division of Student and Campus Life. As such, the Area Coordinator is expected to fulfill their specific responsibilities in a way that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to the articulated mission and goals of their department, the division of Student & Campus Life, and the College. Area Coordinators are also expected to adhere to the professional and ethical standards promulgated by the professional association with which their department is affiliated. Area Coordinators must display the ability to foster diverse and inclusive relationships as well as a high degree of cultural humility.

Area Coordinators AC are live-in professional Residence Life staff members. An Area Coordinators primary duty is to oversee and develop multiple residence halls, two to four, as residential educators, informed supervisors, connection builders, creative managers, and accurate record-keepers. Where applicable, some ACs will supervise a Residence Director as well. The AC position requires flexibility of work hours, including evening and weekend work. Area Coordinators do not have a traditional 8 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. work schedule. As live-on professionals, ACs are considered essential College personnel and must have skills in crisis management. Each AC participates in a night and weekend duty schedule requiring periodic overnight monitoring of a duty phone, the ability to respond to emergency situations, and other related residential duties. Due to the nature of this work, Area Coordinators are required to reside in the apartment provided and assigned by the College via the Department of Residence Life.

Successful Area Coordinators will have academic interests and professional experiences related to residential education, student learning and development, leadership development, civic and social engagement, and the needs of students transitioning to college, particularly first-year and transfer students.

The Area Coordinator role is a three-year position designed to support the professional growth of emerging housing and residential life professionals. Through increasing levels of responsibility, intentional supervision, and leadership development opportunities, the AC position serves as a foundational step for individuals seeking to advance their careers in housing, residence life, or student affairs. Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to foster diverse and inclusive relationships as well as a high degree of cultural sensitivity
  • Ability to live in the provided on-campus apartment for the duration of employment in the AC position
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree
  • Professional or paraprofessional experience in residence life or commensurate experience in student affairs
  • License or certification

Successful applicants will have academic interests and experiences that include residential education, implementing residential curriculum, leadership development, a commitment to diversity, civic and social engagement, and an understanding of the needs of students transitioning to college, especially first-year and transfer students.

Supervision Exercised

This position supervises undergraduate paraprofessionals - Resident Assistants - Senior Resident Assistants. Some Area Coordinators may have an opportunity to supervise graduate interns.

Job Duty Responsibility Function 1: Administration of Residence Halls

  • Administer two to four residence halls by supervising hall opening and closing
  • Oversee furniture and key inventories
  • Track occupancy and administer assignments and room changes
  • Maintain office hours in a residence hall office
  • Address damages and manage damage billing
  • Assess building maintenance needs and communicate them effectively
  • Maintain regular communication and collaborative working relationships with custodial, maintenance, and facilities personnel
  • Balance and maintain a budget for hall programming
  • Maintain up-to-date records and files
  • Address quality of life issues in the residence hall
  • Monitor payroll time sheets and mandatory training for RAs
  • Assist with health, safety, and facilities inspections and follow up on identified concerns
  • Ensure residence halls comply with applicable fire, health, and safety regulations and support emergency preparedness efforts

Job Duty Responsibility Function 2: Community Development

  • Build and sustain positive relationships with residents through availability, accessibility, and intentional outreach
  • Support RA and Hall Council programs
  • Maintain the safety and security of the residence hall
  • Proactively address roommate and community conflicts using mediation and restorative practices when appropriate
  • Provide college life orientation for residents by modeling positive interactions, sending community messages, and encouraging staff to host community meetings
  • Create environments that support students academic success and personal development
  • Sustain and strengthen connections between students and faculty through intentional engagement and collaboration
  • Develop positive relationships with custodial and maintenance staff
  • Create and oversee the halls education plans based on the Residence Life Mission and Educational Priority Learning Goals and the Student and Campus Life Learning Outcomes
  • Implement elements of the residential curriculum and contribute to the assessment of student learning and engagement
  • Hold student conduct meetings, provide informal counseling, and make appropriate referrals to campus and community resources
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, crisis response, and follow-up care for students of concern
