Mission Statement of the Office of State Fire Marshal: To uphold the law and provide for the protection of life and property from the hazards of fire or explosion, to ensure the safety of our citizens in the constructed environment, to provide equal access to disabled individuals, and to promote the efficient use of energy in commercial buildings.

The incumbent will conduct inspections of general occupancy types, will apply architectural principles and techniques in the planning, design, construction, and/or inspection of buildings. This person will also ensure compliance with ADA accessibility and codes as established by regulatory authorities.

Location: Vacancies are located in the Office of State Fire Marshal and may be domiciled within any parish statewide as needed.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Acts as a consultant for the state as it relates to the protection of life and property from the hazards of fire, smoke, explosion, and panic.

  • Identifies, evaluates, and determines the adequacy of the life safety systems in buildings. Life safety systems are comprised of the protection and integrity of egress systems, evaluation of mechanical, electrical, and automatic fire suppression systems, fire protective signaling systems, smoke removal systems, and identification of unique hazards within a building.

  • Evaluates accessibility requirements as promulgated by the state legislature and as adopted by the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council (LSUCCC).

  • Consults and provides recommendations on construction projects by directing and overseeing architects, owners, contractors, state agencies, etc., and the general public in the proper design of all new and renovated work to all public and privately owned buildings so that they will comply with the state adopted laws, codes, rules and regulations.

  • Assists architects, engineers, builders, and building owners in the development of alternatives to achieve an equivalent level of safety as that intended by the adopted laws, codes, rules, and regulations.

  • On projects where no architect or engineer is required by law, consults and recommends to building owners alternative solutions to code requirements.

  • Reviews construction documents for general compliance with the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment.

Career Progression: This position may be filled as an Architect 2 or 3.

Work Schedule: Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday.

Location: Vacancies are located in the Office of State Fire Marshal and may be domiciled within any parish statewide as needed.

Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience. The Special Entrance bi-weekly rate for these positions is as follows:

Architect 2 (TS314) - $2,516.80

Architect 3 (TS316) - $2,780.80
