The Appliance Repair Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of residential and commercial appliances across university facilities. This position ensures appliances and related electrical systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably in accordance with manufacturer specifications, university standards, and applicable safety regulations. The appliance repair technician also supports general facilities maintenance activities, including basic carpentry, painting, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work as needed to support campus operations. This position is open to both entry-level and experienced technicians. Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate reliability, attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship. Depending on qualifications and experience, work may be performed independently or under the guidance of senior staff. Ongoing training and professional development opportunities are provided to support skill development, certification attainment, and career growth.

Primary Responsibilities

Appliance Repair and Maintenance (60%)

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain residential and commercial appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, dishwashers, ranges, ovens, microwaves, washers, dryers, water heaters, garbage disposals, and related equipment.
  • Inspect appliances to identify mechanical, electrical, and electronic malfunctions.
  • Replace defective components and perform preventive maintenance to maximize equipment life and minimize downtime.
  • Coordinate repairs and installations with housing, custodial, and maintenance personnel to minimize service disruptions.
  • Educate residents and occupants on proper appliance operation and maintenance practices.
  • Refer specialized or complex repairs to appropriate trades as needed.

General Facilities Maintenance (25%)

  • Perform routine and corrective maintenance in support of campus facilities, including minor carpentry, painting, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work.
  • Assist with repairs to doors, hardware, fixtures, flooring, outlets, switches, smoke detectors, plumbing fixtures, and other building systems.
  • Support campus events, special projects, and emergency response and recovery operations.
  • Assist other Facilities Management trades as assigned.

Student Employee Supervision and Training (10%)

  • Assign, monitor, and evaluate the work of student employees.
  • Provide training, mentoring, coaching, and constructive feedback to support technical and professional development.
  • Conduct safety training and promote safe work practices, professionalism, dependability, and effective communication.

Administrative and Operational Responsibilities (5%)

  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and labor hours.
  • Operate and maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and machinery.
  • Communicate and collaborate with supervisors, technicians, contractors, engineers, and campus personnel.
  • Comply with OSHA regulations, building codes, university policies, and participate in on-call and emergency response rotations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1-2 years of experience in appliance repair, electrical work or a related skilled trade preferred, but not required.
  • Certification in refrigeration or other related certifications preferred but not required.
  • Valid US Driver’s License required.

Skills

Approximate starting hourly rate:

21.00 - 22.00
