POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
APPELLATE ATTORNEY
The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of Alabama is accepting applications for Appellate Attorneys for the Birmingham and Huntsville, Alabama offices. The Federal Public Defender Organization provides legal representation and criminal defense services to individuals charged with federal crimes who are financially unable to retain counsel.
The Appellate Attorney will draft briefs, present oral arguments in the Eleventh Circuit, seek certiorari when appropriate, and provide advanced research and writing assistance to trial attorneys in both the Birmingham and Huntsville offices. In addition to being a skilled appellate advocate, this attorney will also proactively assist trial attorneys in developing legal strategies and crafting and arguing pretrial motions. The attorney will also regularly appear in district court for pretrial proceedings and give continuing legal education presentations on developments in the law.
Applicants with significant appellate experience and/or a judicial clerkship are encouraged to apply. Salary is dependent on experience, qualifications, and in accordance with Administrative Office, Defender Service Office, and United States Courts guidelines. This position is full-time with federal salary and benefits. Employees of the Federal Public Defender are members of the Judicial Branch of the government. They are considered at-will employees and are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory background investigation. Salary is payable only by Electronic Funds Transfer.
