Advanced Placement Readers for the Chinese and Japanese discipline evaluate and score AP students' free-responses ensuring that high school students receive AP grades that accurately reflect college-level achievement.

Each year in June, faculty from around the world gather at sites across the United States to:

  • exchange ideas among faculty and AP Development committee members
  • establish friendships and a network of faculty members
  • score the exam responses from AP high school students
  • practice how to use a rubric consistently, which provides valuable knowledge for scoring their own students' essays
  • earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Professional Development Hours (PDHs)

The free-response sections of the AP Chinese and Japanese Examinations are scored on laptops provided at a centralized location.Any new applicants, who are approved by Chief Readers, are sent information regarding the online tutorial and certification process prior to the annual Reading session. Certification must be successfully completed by the potential reader on his or her home or secured office computer prior to appointment. Temporary Work Authorization

Persons who are not legally authorized to work in the U.S. may be eligible for temporary work authorization in an H-1B visa classification for "specialty occupations." For persons selected to receive an invitation to serve as a Reader, ETS may attempt to obtain H-1B work authorization. H-1B visas are employer-specific. In other words, you may not work for ETS with an H-1B Visa obtained for you by another U.S. employer. If you are currently working in the U.S. within an H-1B status obtained by another U.S. employer, ETS must obtain approval of a separate H-1B petition on your behalf in order for you to work for ETS. In addition, we must explore whether persons who are in the U.S. in another visa status can in fact obtain H-1B status with ETS' sponsorship without jeopardizing their current immigration status.

As part of the documentation required to support ETS' petition for H-1B status on your behalf, you are required to submit copies of your relevant degree(s). If your degree is not specific to the AP Exam you are applying to score, you will need to send a copy of your school transcripts. Please prepare to send this extra documentation along with your completed Reader application form.
