Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA


Job Overview:
The Animal Technician provides daily care and husbandry for laboratory animals, maintains animal housing areas, performs sanitation and sterilization procedures, monitors animal health, maintains records, and supports biomedical research in compliance with applicable regulations and standard operating procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals (primarily rodents)
  • Change cages and racks
  • Feed and provide water according to established procedures
  • Clean and sanitize animal rooms and equipment
  • Operate cage washers and autoclaves
  • Monitor and report animal health concerns
  • Maintain animal care and health records
  • Record temperature, humidity, feed logs, and animal inventory
  • Follow federal, state, and institutional animal care regulations
  • Perform general animal husbandry and facility maintenance
  • Support research staff and veterinary personnel as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of laboratory animal handling or animal sanitation equipment experience
  • OR two years of animal care experience with appropriate animal species
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Preferred Certification:

  • Training equivalent to Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification (AALAS)

Required Skills:

  • Laboratory animal handling and husbandry
  • Animal health observation and reporting
  • Cage washing and sterilization procedures
  • Knowledge of cleaning agents and disinfectants
  • Record keeping and documentation
  • Basic computer skills (email, barcode scanning, electronic reporting, online training, timesheets)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of laboratory animal regulations and compliance

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Push and pull heavy carts/equipment
  • Stand and walk up to 7 hours per day
  • Bend, kneel, squat, and reach overhead frequently
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including gowns, gloves, masks, eye protection, safety shoes, and respirators when required
  • Follow laboratory safety rules, including no eating, drinking, or smoking in animal areas

Schedule:

 
  • Monday–Friday, 07:30 AM – 04:30 PM
 

Employment Requirement:

  • Candidates must be W-2 employees of the submitting agency.
