POSITION TITLE: Animal Scientist

REPORTS TO: Production Manager

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Animal Scientist will be responsible for the overall care of the poultry that we raise.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Record feed and water usage for poultry on a daily basis and monitor relative to weight and age of poultry to ensure proper rate of growth and egg production, pick up and record daily bird mortality, record and monitor daily temperatures, and assist with gathering live birds and mislaid eggs as needed.
  • Record bird characteristics such as weights, growth patterns, and diets.
  • Document and/or review barn temperatures, air quality, information relative to egg Client percentage, feed consumption, mortality, and other daily activities, which keep track of the health of the birds.
  • Examine birds to detect symptoms of illness or injury.
  • Treat minor injuries and ailments as well as contact veterinarians to obtain treatment for birds with serious illnesses or injuries.
  • Perform ongoing medical treatment of birds that need it, as necessary.
  • Operate and monitor bird feed and watering systems, including flushing water lines routinely.
  • Document and report, with the ability to recognize, advanced avian health concerns and analyze documentation to assist in improving the health of the birds as well as the output of eggs throughout the year.
  • Repair and maintain layer cages.
  • Ensure collectors and belts are sanitary, operate and clean manure scrapers, and monitor egg belts and elevators for egg jams.
  • Use air hoses to clean buildings, clean, sweep, and perform other biosecurity requirements, while following all OSHA safety regulations and procedures.
  • Adhere to our processes to ensure the fair and ethical treatment of the poultry at all times and will follow all procedures outlined by the United States Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, and all other Federal, State, and local government agencies.
  • Maintain all bio-security measures in order to minimize the transfer of disease between poultry locations.
** While some of these particular tasks are not technical in nature, the Animal Scientist may assist with these necessary duties as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
  • An animal science or similar degree is required.
  • A basic understanding of bird welfare and behavior, including piling, mortality, illness, and egg laying, is required.
  • Animal husbandry skills, such as maintaining proper feed, water, climate, and living conditions within the building, are required.
  • Intermediate English-speaking level or higher is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Must possess the ability to work in an agricultural environment, indoors, outdoors, office, warehouse, processing, and farm production areas each varying in temperature, and other environment-specific atmospheres.
