Class Summary

Job Description

The Animal Control Officer I will be provided training to ensure all animals are in good health, properly fed, watered, and issued any required medication. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring a disease-free living environment by disinfecting cages. The officers that are assigned to field operations will work with local authorities when responding to citizen complaints of stray, vicious, sick, injured, or diseased animals. This role assists in investigations, including reported bite cases and domestic animal and livestock cruelty and abandonment. The incumbent will also be assisting in conducting rabies quarantine checks, as well as assisting in euthanizing animals, which includes decapitation and the preparation and transportation of specimens in some cases.

Essential Duties

  • Assisting in euthanizing animals and other functions assigned to the euthanasia laboratory
  • Assisting in the decapitation, preparation, and transportation of specimens to the state lab for testing
  • Assisting with investigating cruelty and abandonment of domestic animals and livestock
  • Assisting with investigating reported bite cases
  • Assisting in conducting rabies quarantine checks and verifying quarantine requirements are met
  • Maintaining logs on all diseases, medications, and treatments as required by state and federal regulations
  • Working closely with senior officers to gather information used to prosecute violators
  • Assisting field officers in unloading, checking in and relocating animals in the shelter
  • Assisting with maintaining various records on animals, up to and including processing intakes and adoptions, reviewing, and upkeeping of medical charts and records, and keeping records on animals held for court cases
  • Assisting the public with touring the shelter for lost or adoptable animals

Public Speaking Duties

  • May assist with adoption and/or outreach events

Other Job Requirements/Information

  • This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
  • This job may require on-call rotation and emergency after hours, weekends, and/or holidays.

Grade

The grade for this position is A12(3). Salary will be dependent on education and experience.

Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, or G.E.D.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above will also be considered.

  • Pre-exposure Rabies vaccine or current titer completed within 6 months of employment

  • Valid drivers license

Preferred Qualifications in addition to the above minimum qualifications

  • Proficient in English communication, capable of clear and professional verbal and written expression
  • 1 year of experience in animal control or a related field
