Job Summary:
The 1:1 ASL Interpreter provides direct sign language interpreting services to a student who is Deaf/Hard of Hearing in accordance with their Individualized Education Program (IEP). The interpreter ensures full access to the academic curriculum, peer and staff communication, and all school-related activities. This role is integral to the student's educational and social-emotional success in both general education and specialized settings. 
- Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Interpret spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and signed communication into spoken English for the assigned student across all academic subjects and school activities. 
- Support full participation in classroom instruction, group work, one-on-one teaching, specials (PE, Art, etc.), field trips, and assemblies. 
- Provide visual access and environmental cues to support student understanding and engagement.                
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, and related service providers to ensure effective instructional access and accommodations. 
- Assist in fostering student independence by adjusting level of support appropriately based on task, context, and student needs. 
- Promote self-advocacy skills by encouraging the student to request clarification or seek help as needed.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Education, Training and Experience:High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or higher preferred.
- Experience in K--12 educational settings. Familiarity with IEP processes and special education accommodations. Experience working with school-age students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing. 
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at a professional interpreting level (required). 
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and the linguistic needs of D/HH students. 
- Oral and written communication in English and Spanish, strong interpersonal, basic math, keyboarding, personal computer, word processing, organization, coordination, research and problem-solving skills.
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher OR valid RID certification.
- CPR and First Aid preferred.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
- Basic English, writing and communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of computers and office equipment.
- Criminal background check and District fingerprinting required.
