Registered Respiratory Therapist I (RT-I) Contract Position

Position Summary

The Registered Respiratory Therapist I (RT-I) is a licensed healthcare professional responsible for performing respiratory therapy procedures, cardiopulmonary diagnostics, and patient assessments under the direction of a licensed physician.

The RT-I provides comprehensive respiratory care to neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients with cardiopulmonary disorders. This role assumes primary responsibility for respiratory therapy modalities, including therapeutic interventions, patient monitoring, equipment management, and supervision of respiratory therapy technicians when applicable.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, treat, and monitor patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary conditions.
  • Initiate and perform respiratory therapeutic procedures in accordance with physician orders and established clinical protocols.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary diagnostics and patient assessments.
  • Maintain accurate patient documentation within the EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Select, assemble, inspect, troubleshoot, and operate respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Provide respiratory support in critical care, emergency department, and transport settings.
  • Participate in neonatal, pediatric, and adult respiratory care management.
  • Prioritize emergent and non-emergent respiratory care requests.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, interdisciplinary teams, patients, and families.
  • Supervise respiratory therapy technicians as assigned.
  • Maintain compliance with institutional policies, HIPAA standards, and professional codes of ethics.

Education Requirements

  • Graduate of an AMA-approved Respiratory Care Program.
  • Minimum Associate Degree in Respiratory Care required.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active New York State Respiratory Therapist License (unrestricted and in good standing).
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification Preferred.
  • Current continuing education profile compliant with NYS requirements.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist in an academic medical center.
  • Experience with:
    • Adult critical care
    • Pediatric respiratory care (highly desirable)
    • Emergency Department procedures (highly desirable)
    • Neonatal patient management (preferred)
    • Inter- and intra-hospital patient transport
  • EPIC EHR experience Required

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Communication Skills

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English effectively.
  • Interpret physician orders, progress notes, and clinical documentation.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.

Technical & Computer Skills

  • Proficient navigation of Electronic Medical Records (EPIC required).
  • Competent use of respiratory therapy equipment and monitoring systems.

Mathematical Skills

  • Perform medication dosage calculations.
  • Apply basic arithmetic and simple algebra for clinical calculations.

Professional Competencies

  • Adherence to AARC Code of Ethics and institutional Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Demonstrate professional appearance, accountability, and ethical practice.

Reasoning & Critical Thinking

  • Interpret written and verbal clinical instructions.
  • Clarify unclear physician orders through professional communication.
  • Prioritize workload based on patient acuity and clinical urgency.
