Job Description:
Reporting to the Director of Facilities and Operations, the Assistant Director of Facilities and Operations provides district-wide leadership, supervision, and management of assigned operational functions, personnel, programs, and projects. The Assistant Director serves as a member of the Facilities and Operations leadership team and is responsible for ensuring the effective execution of operational priorities that support safe, efficient, and high-quality learning environments. The Assistant Director assists in the administration of district facilities, infrastructure, operational services, capital projects, maintenance programs, safety initiatives, technology systems, transportation services, food service operations, and other operational functions as assigned by the Director.
Qualifications:
- Experience in facilities management, building maintenance, or a related technical field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of three (5) years of experience supervising custodial, facilities, or building operations staff.
- Experience in standardized facilities, custodial and janitorial best practices.
- Valid Connecticut drivers license required.
- Experience in a public school setting and/or unionized environment preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Assists the Director of Facilities and Operations in implementing district operational goals, priorities, and performance standards.
- Provides leadership and direct supervision to assigned operational personnel and programs.
- Supervises staff selection, evaluation, professional development, and performance management activities in accordance with district policy and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
- Oversees assigned operational functions and ensures effective service delivery, responsiveness, and continuous improvement.
- Assists in the development, administration, and monitoring of operational budgets within Board-approved appropriations.
- Coordinates procurement activities, contract administration, vendor relationships, and purchasing processes within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Assists with planning, coordination, and oversight of capital projects, facility improvements, infrastructure initiatives, and operational modernization efforts.
- Oversees implementation of preventive maintenance programs, work order systems, inspections, and corrective action plans within assigned operational areas.
- Conducts facility and operational assessments to identify needs, recommend improvements, and support long-range planning efforts.
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, permits, and district policies.
- Ensures compliance with chemical hygiene and asbestos laws and regulations.
- Supports district-wide emergency preparedness, safety initiatives, security programs, and operational continuity planning.
- Collaborates with building principals and district administrators to ensure operational systems effectively support instructional programming and school-level needs.
- Serves as a liaison with contractors, consultants, municipal officials, regulatory agencies, and service providers.
- Prepares reports, recommendations, presentations, and other materials for the Director of Facilities and Operations and Superintendent as requested.
- Supports strategic planning, organizational improvement initiatives, and operational restructuring efforts as directed.
