Position Summary

Performs and supervises a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of buildings, hangars, grounds, airport lighting systems, streets, sewers, water runways, taxiways, aprons, safety areas and equipment at a commercial service airport; performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work in this class involves responsibility for performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of buildings, hangars, facilities, airport lighting systems, equipment, streets, sewers, water, runways, taxiways, aprons, safety areas and grounds. Assignments are received in the form of oral, written or computer-based work orders. The work is performed according to general or specific instructions of a lead worker or supervisor who inspects work while in progress and upon completion.

Job Duties

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in a variety of building, hangars, equipment, street, sewer, water and grounds maintenance and repair activities; responsible for functions listed in Airport Emergency Plan, Airport Certification Manual, Airport Safety Management Systems and Airport Security Plan.
  • Ability to read and follow Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circulars and equipment manuals; airfield radio communications; recognize, report and repair FAA Part 139 deficiencies.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to buildings, equipment, street, sewer, water, perimeter fencing and grounds maintenance.
  • Safely perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of various types of equipment and facilities; including boarding bridges, baggage carousels, HVAC, solar farm.
  • Handle a variety of tasks without close supervision; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and directions; ability to plan, organize and supervise the activities of employees.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
  • Ability to work outside during inclement weather.
  • Physical ability to handle medium to heavy work with some heavy lifting; skill in the building or mechanical trade; skill in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform various repair tasks.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position requires sitting, standing, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, grasping and repetitive motions in the performance of daily duties; both near and far vision (with or without corrective device) while performing maintenance inspection of equipment; ability to lift, drag, and push vehicles, motors, engines, and other equipment and supplies weighing up to 65 pounds; acceptable hearing (with or without corrective device); safely work with power and noise-producing tools and equipment; and ability to drive a motorized vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The Airport Maintenance Worker works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot and cold, indoors and outdoors. Depending on necessity, the Utility Worker will be expected to work a range of shifts: regular, evening and weekend shift work. Work includes working outdoors, responding to weather related emergency operations and being on call at various times throughout the year including holidays and weekends as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in the repair and maintenance of equipment, airport lighting systems, grounds, streets, sewers, water, runways, taxiways, aprons, safety areas, hangars and buildings including some experience in construction work as a building or mechanical trade apprentice; possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the essential knowledge for work at commercial service airfield, skills and abilities.

Possession of or ability to obtain any or all of the following:

  1. Valid commercial drivers license with air brakes and tanker endorsements.

  2. Pesticide applicators license.

  3. Pass and maintain airfield drivers permit as required by Federal Aviation Administration, including FAA ATCT communications.

  4. Pass and maintain security background check as required by Transportation Security Regulations.

  5. Pass and maintain FAA Drug and Alcohol testing endorsements.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Employee shall establish their principal place of residence within fifty (50) miles of the corporate limits of the city of Dubuque as soon as practicable after appointment, but within two years of appointment.
