The success of Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) would not be possible without the expertise and dedication of the nearly 1,600 Airmen who serve as Aerospace Science Instructors. Oscoda Area Schools is seeking a committed and motivated AFJROTC Instructor to help build and sustain a robust, student-centered program at Oscoda High School.

Program Overview

Air Force Junior ROTC is a comprehensive leadership and aerospace education program that extends beyond the traditional school day and classroom. AFJROTC instructors:

  • Teach aerospace science and leadership education curricula

  • Supervise Leadership Development Requirements (LDRs) such as:

  • Drill teams

  • Academic bowl teams

  • Marksmanship teams

  • Other experiential learning activities

  • Support a dynamic program with multiple active LDRs throughout the year

Responsibilities of All AFJROTC Instructors

AFJROTC instructors are held to the highest personal and professional standards and must comply with all applicable Department of Defense, Air Force, and AFJROTC instructions. Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching AFJROTC aerospace science and leadership courses

  • Supervising cadets during:

  • Official unit events

  • Community service activities

  • Drill competitions

  • Curriculum-in-action trips

  • Base visits and parades

  • Serving as a liaison between the Air Force and civilian aerospace agencies

  • Providing career and performance counseling to cadets

Commitment to a Safe and Respectful Environment

Instructors must ensure the AFJROTC program is a safe zone, free from:

  • Sexual harassment or assault
  • Inappropriate comments, jokes, or behavior
  • Bullying, hazing, intimidation, or physical discipline
  • Racial or gender bias

Unwelcome behaviors, or the perception of such behaviors, must never be associated with the AFJROTC program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

AFJROTC instructors are held to the highest personal and professional standards and must comply with all applicable Department of Defense, Air Force, and AFJROTC instructions. Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Conduct academic classes

  • Teach 55-minute class periods

  • Instruct up to 4-6 classes per day

  • Work with diverse groups of students (up to 30+ per class)

  • Demonstrate strong organization, communication, and patience

  • Lead before and/or after-school activities.

  • Coordinate and supervise indoor and outdoor activities

  • Lead physical training, drill instruction, academic clubs, and team events

  • Demonstrate strong teambuilding skills and physical stamina

  • Lead off-campus events.

  • Supervise field trips, parades, community events

  • Maintain calm and professionalism in dynamic environments

  • Serve as an ambassador of the Air Force.

  • Uphold a positive image of the Air Force

  • Maintain professional conduct and military appearance in uniform

  • Meet certification requirements.

  • Complete all state, local, and district-mandated teacher certification and continuing education requirements.

  • Additional requirements must be completed at no expense to the Air Force.

  • Support curriculum and program administration

  • Use AFJROTC-approved interactive learning technology

  • Assist with curriculum planning, assessments, logistics, and finances

  • Share academic, administrative, and extracurricular responsibilities equally among instructors

  • Complete mandatory AFJROTC training

  • Successfully complete all required Air Force Junior ROTC instructor training

Required Qualifications (Officers):

  • Must possess a current instructor certification letter from Headquarters (assistance available).
  • Bachelor's degree (Officer Instructor)
  • Associate's degree (Enlisted Instructor)

Preferred Qualifications (Officer Instructor):

  • Teaching Experience
  • Complex Program Management Experience
  • Youth Leadership and Mentoring Experience

Preferred Qualifications (Officer Instructor):

  • Extensive experience in:
  • Leadership and supervision
  • Logistics and administration
  • Drill and ceremony
  • Teaching and mentoring youth.

Required Skills:
