This position will be housed at the Fayette County Extension Office in Fayette, AL.
This is a limited term position. Continued employment is based on the continuation of extramural funding and is subject to renewal.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System seeks an Agent Assistant I/II – Parent Educator. The Parent Educator will be responsible for visiting families of unborn to five-year-old children in Fayette County, providing support to new parents. The visit will be on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis unless more time is needed. Parent Educators will assist parents in developing a better understanding of child development, establishing expectations, and gaining skills to support school readiness for their children.

The Agent Assistant will have a 40-hour work week schedule and periodically provide evening and/or weekend hours.

EXTENSION: The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is the outreach organization for the land grant mission of Alabama A&M University and Auburn University. Responsibilities:
  • Implement the curriculum provided by the National Parents as Teachers Center and the local districts enhancements.
  • Serve up to 15 families with a minimum of 2 home visits per month per family.
  • A minimum of three parent group meetings per year.
  • Complete all required documentation regarding home visits, attendance records, PAT events, screening summaries, and reports requested by the coordinator.
  • Actively recruit families to participate in the program. Attend all required trainings for certification, in-service, and screenings.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings with supervisor, lead parent educator, and other parent educators.
  • Provide community support services to families as needed.
  • Requires visiting families in the homes and must be comfortable with delivering educational services in a nonjudgmental/strengths-based manner
  • Must be well organized and be able to keep up with complicated timelines for screening and reporting.
  • Passion for job, upbeat, enthusiastic, team player.
  • Flexibility with respect to time and days to work (should be able to work some weekends and evenings when client schedules require it). Regular hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Qualifications:
  • Level I- High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in the organization and/or presentation of pre-designed educational programs/services, customer service, administrative support/clerical or related experience.

    Level II- High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 years of experience in the organization and/or presentation of pre-designed educational programs/services, customer service, administrative support/clerical or related experience.

    Substitutions allowed for Experience:
    Degrees may be accepted in lieu of experience

Minimum License and Certifications:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to selection.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Effective communication and human relation skills.
  • An understanding of basic mathematical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately maintain records.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and professionally with families, volunteers, and coworkers.
  • Sincere interest in working with program participants in a home/ educational setting.
  • Decision making and leadership skills.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft tools including Excel.

Minimum Technology Skills:

  • A working knowledge of operating a personal computer, including a demonstrated competency using Microsoft Office software.
