A day in the life
You start your shift in the weld shop, setting up Ultrasonic and Magnetic Particle inspections on first-article weldments. After reviewing blueprints and engineering specs, you move to a climate-controlled cell to run Penetrant and Radiographic (X-Ray) evaluations on complex assemblies. Between jobs, you verify instrument calibrations, document results with full traceability, and collaborate with welders on WPS compliance and improvements. By day’s end, you’ve closed travelers, confirmed part counts and condition, and authored clear reports aligned to AS9100, ISO 9001, and military standards.
What you’ll do
- Execute non-destructive testing across Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, X-Ray (Radiography), Ultrasonic, and Visual methods, judging acceptability to applicable specifications.
- Interpret blueprints and engineering documents to plan and conduct inspections.
- Inspect first-run and first-article parts, including fabrication fit-ups, weldments, and assemblies.
- Use precision tools to verify dimensions (e.g., length, height, angles).
- Calibrate and monitor NDT equipment and inspection instruments.
- Analyze nonconformances, identify root cause, and recommend process modifications.
- Track welder qualifications and monitor weld procedure qualification tests for WPS compliance.
- Verify traveler sign-offs, part quantities, and absence of handling damage.
- Produce inspection reports and charts with complete traceability.
- Perform internal audits per the quality manual, ISO, and customer requirements.
- Identify and implement waste-reducing, quality-boosting improvements.
Credentials that fit
- National accreditation (ASNT or equivalent) at Level I, II, or III.
- Certification tiers: Level I is accruing hours toward certification; Level II typically holds one to three method certifications; Level III holds four or five.
- High school diploma required, and U.S. citizenship required.
- Formal classroom training in at least two NDT disciplines with required experience hours.
- Training in SPC data collection, chemical handling safety, and radiography required.
- Annual vision exam: Jaeger 1 at 12" and Ishihara Color Blindness Test.
- 5+ years as a certified NDT Technician in at least one discipline.
- 5+ years working in or around a metal joining/welding facility.
- At least two nationally recognized competency levels (ASNT, AWS, or equivalent).
- Strong problem-solving with demonstrable corrective action capability.
Where you’ll work
Machine shops, fabrication areas, and assembly bays with moderate noise and potential exposure to machine oils, welding fumes, and metal particles. Some testing occurs in active production environments; climate-controlled inspection areas are available. All activities follow rigorous defense quality frameworks: AS9100, ISO 9001, and applicable military specifications, with strict documentation and traceability.
