Job Description:

Reports directly to Operations and works under the supervision and collaboration agreement of assigned surgeons. Collaborates closely with registered nurses, medical assistants, schedulers, ultrasound technologists, and billing/coding personnel.

The Advanced Practice Provider will work collaboratively with surgeons and clinical staff to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in a multi-specialty surgical practice. The APP will provide comprehensive services in both the outpatient clinic and inpatient hospital settings, supporting the continuum of care from initial consultation through post-operative management. The APP serves as a clinical leader, promoting evidence-based practice, ensuring regulatory compliance, and contributing to the practice's quality, safety, and patient satisfaction goals. This role also supports professional development and mentorship within the multidisciplinary team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct new patient evaluations, follow-up visits, and post-operative assessments in the clinic setting.
  • Perform inpatient rounding, clinical assessments, and hospital consultations, with occasional travel to affiliated hospitals as needed.
  • Assist in pre-operative evaluations, risk assessments, perioperative optimization, and discharge coordination.
  • Provide thorough patient education regarding procedures, treatment plans, and recovery expectations.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and navigator, helping patients understand surgical pathways, timelines, and recovery expectations.
  • Participate in after-hours and weekend call coverage as assigned by the practice.
  • Order, interpret, and review diagnostic tests and imaging; adjust care plans accordingly.
  • Prescribe medications and manage ongoing treatment in collaboration with supervising physicians.
  • Perform minor in-office procedures within the scope of licensure and clinical need.
  • Support clinic operations through timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR), care coordination, and participation in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care across all surgical specialties.
  • Participate in clinical audits, safety initiatives, and quality improvement projects to enhance surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with billing teams to ensure appropriate coding and documentation for surgical procedures and clinic visits.
  • Participate in clinical research, data collection, or quality improvement initiatives to advance surgical outcomes and practice efficiency.
  • Mentor and precept nursing or physician assistant students, fostering clinical education and professional growth.
  • Engage in continuing education and professional development to maintain licensure and certification standards.
  • Participate in departmental and organizational meetings, contributing to policy and process improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention, HIPAA, OSHA, and Joint Commission standards.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of Tennessee Oncology Advanced Practice Provider Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the Advanced Practice Practitioner as outlined in the Tennessee Oncology Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Advanced clinical knowledge of surgical patient care, including pre-operative, perioperative, and post-operative management across outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills to manage complex patient conditions and adjust care plans appropriately.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively partner with surgeons and multidisciplinary teams while providing patient education.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations, quality improvement, and patient safety standards (HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission)
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and EMR skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree or higher from an accredited Nurse practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  • Active state licensure and national board certification (ANCC, AANP, or NCCPA) are required.
  • Knowledge of surgical principles, sterile technique, perioperative workflow, and procedural experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment, decision-making, and communication skills.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required; Advanced Cardiac Life support (ACLS) optional.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment.

PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during patient care, hospital rounds, and procedures.
  • Frequent lifting, positioning, and assisting patients (up to 25-35 pounds regularly, occasionally up to 50 lbs.).
  • Manual dexterity for performing procedures, using medical instruments, and operating clinical equipment.
  • Ability to bend, reach, and perform physical examinations.
