The Position

Administrative Intern - Engineering

The City of Ontario has a tremendous opportunity for Engineering students as an Administrative Intern - Engineering! The City of Ontario has an exciting part-time opportunity for an Administrative Intern- Engineering with our Engineering Departments. As an Engineering Intern youll be working alongside our Engineering team in a fun and fast paced environment and be exposed to countless projects including the commercial, industrial, and residential development of 8,000 acres of land, which is estimated to bring in over 150,000 new residents to the City of Ontario over the next 30 years. Join our team to learn and gain valuable experience within the Engineering Field and be a part of the many other notable projects moving forward in an effort to revitalize the City extending from the downtown area to the arena district.

We are looking for team members that want to make a positive impact on the community while developing professional skills in the areas of Civil Engineering, Traffic/Transportation, Environmental Programs, Capital Improvement Projects and/or Land Development. Interns will have the ability to observe and participate in a variety of tasks that support the overall operation of the assigned department.

The Ideal Candidate will possess:

  • Knowledge of basic Civil Engineering principles.
  • The capability to use AutoCAD and MS Office software programs;
  • The ability to compile, organize, and analyze data and create reports and spreadsheets;
  • When assigned to the Municipal Utilities Company, candidates will have the knowledge of engineering principles that pertain to hydraulics, pipe design, and operation and maintenance of municipal utilities

Successful candidates will have the ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team environment. The successful candidates will embody the Citys mission and vision as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the Citys Customer Service Philosophy - Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving.

Part-time/Temporary employees may be scheduled to work up to 29 hours per week and are not eligible to participate in the Citys health insurance or retirement plans.

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Administrative Intern in Engineering include the following:

  • Assists with the Engineering Counter including interacting with customers.
  • Assists department staff by performing basic administrative and technical assignments.
  • Utilizes Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for data analysis and infrastructure mapping.
  • Operates personal computers, printers, and other office equipment.
  • Performs research and preliminary administrative analysis.
  • Performs field work which includes photo documentation of construction sites, storm drains, and public streets.
  • Reviews and summarizes publications and documents.
  • Composes and edits correspondence, memorandums, reports, and other special assignments.
  • Gathers and tabulates data.
  • Responds to requests for information and general questions from the public.
  • Prepares files for storage.
  • Assists with specials projects and events.
  • Assists with the review and processing of encroachment and traffic control permits, environmental inspection reports, conditional use permits, etc.
  • Assists with the coordination of permit activities with other City Departments.
  • Assists with basic AutoCad drafting

Qualification Guidelines

Education

Equivalent to completion of two years of college at an accredited college/university with major course work in Civil Engineering or a related field.

Licenses

Valid California Class C drivers license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Recently graduated from a Bachelor's Degree program from an accredited college/university with a major emphasis in Civil Engineering or a related field and possesses an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
