The Administrative Assistant I position plays a vital role in supporting the operations of City of Salina's Animal Services. As the first point of contact for visitors, this roleprovides crucial customer service by answering inquiries, processing animal adoptions, surrenders, & reclaims. This position plays a key role in matching people with the dogs or cats that they're seeking to adopt. The new employee's ability to communicate effectively & compassionately will help ensure that both animals & the community receive the care & attention that they deserve.

Career Advancement: Animal Control Officer, Lead Animal Control Officer, Animal Services Coordinator.

On-the-Job Training: Experienced staff provide training to help our new administrative assistant build knowledge of required reception duties, customer service, & daily office procedures. Staff also trains the employee in accurate data entry, report preparation, filing systems, & the careful handling of cash, deposits, & confidential information. This hands-on guidance supports steady growth in professional judgment, organization, & reliability as the employee becomes more familiar with department processes & service standards. With continued support from experienced staff, the position offers a strong foundation for learning new skills, expanding responsibilities, & building a lasting career in local government service.

Duties:
• Greets citizens; answers inquiries & provides customer service in-person & via telephone.
• Directs public to dog or cat area of their choice.
• Dispatches calls for Animal Control Officers, logs calls & messages.
• Processes adoptions, surrenders, reclaims, donations & strays for the facility.
• Maintains the cash drawer; handles deposit procedures.
• Performs detailed data entry, prepares reports, & maintains records & files; provides administrative support as needed; sorts & distributes mail.
• Assists with maintaining inventory of office & routine pet supplies.

Education:
• High school diploma or G.E.D. with business & typing courses.

Experience:
• One (1) year office setting.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office products preferred.

Work Type:
• Light, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
• Works inside in office environment.
• Sits about 90% of the time.

Equipment:
• Adding machine, calculator, computer, copy machine, fax machine, printer, radio, & telephone.

Hours:
• Monday - Friday.
• 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Starting Pay DOQ EOE:
• $17.39-18.26/hr.
• $36,171-37,981/yr.
• Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.

Paid Time Off:
• 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
• 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
